Business gives gold to schools

By Crystal Hayduk
Special Writer

Mike Jackson, owner of Vogels and Fosters clothing store in downtown Chelsea, donated $800 to the Chelsea School Districts general fund following the Chelsea Gold event on Thanksgiving weekend. Jackson came up with the idea of providing gold to Chelsea schools as a take-off on the retail industrys Black Friday. He offered to donate a portion of the proceeds from Thanksgiving weekend

sales to the school system, and he hoped that other businesses would participate as well. Kevin Frahm, owner of the Global Marketplace on Middle Street, has set aside $500 for donation to the district. On a personal level, Jackson appreciated the education, guidance, and variety of opportunities his two children received through the district. Chelsea schools do a great job of teaching students and provide a strong incentive for people to move into Chelsea, Jackson said.

Although many Chelsea area businesses donate to school groups throughout the year, Jackson sought a method to both give to the schools and to encourage people to choose to shop locally whenever possible. Local businesses continue to change our product mix and services to remain relevant, up to date, and unique, he said. However, independent businesses do Photo by Crystal Hayduk not have the advertising Kevin Frahm, (right) owner of Global Marketplace, writes budget of large corporaa check for $500 to the Chelsea School District to prestions. North Creek Elementary School leads the Chelsea School District with the most teachers ranked highly effective, according to a state report released earlier this month. Six of North Creeks 30 teachers evaluated for the 2011-12 school year were given the highest designation on the Educator Effectiveness Report while the remaining 24 were deemed effective. The report ranks teachers within one of four designations highly effective, effective, minimally effective and ineffective. No teachers were considered ineffective in the district, however, one teacher at Chelsea High School was considered minimally effective. District wide, 130 teachers were designated as effective, 15 highly effective and one minimally effective. Overall, the county had more than 150 teachers ranked as highly

Martial arts students donate food for local Faith in Action

Students from Family Martial Arts of Chelsea got into the holiday spirit, but not by hanging wreaths or singing carols. For the fifth year in a row, Tae Kwon Do and Hap Ki Do students at this Lyndon Township martial arts studio helped contribute to Faith in Actions food bank by collecting and donating canned, boxed, and shelf-stable food. Our Holiday Food Drive started out in 2008 as a leadership project for our assistant instructor, Michael Hoffman, when he was in high school, said Ana Hotaling, Family Martial Arts master instructor. Our students enjoyed the fact that they were making a difference for local lessprivileged families so much that this has become an annual event. A total of 75 pounds of food was donated by Family Martial Arts students and their families to FIA, more than in previous years. Hotaling hopes that the trend to give more each year will continue. Many dont realize how badly the economy has affected people in the community, she said. The family next to you in church, the kid that sits next to your daughter on the bus, anyone you know might have now reached a point in their financial status where they need that boost of help to make it through the holidays, or any day. Hotaling said the lesson on charitable giving is not lost on her students. Its refreshing to hear an 8 year old or an 11 year old say that theyre happy that they can help out folks in need, she said. During the holiday season, so many children are single
