What is Harvest Festival?

What do these fruits and vegetables have in common?

You grew them with Mrs. Newman ....and then you HARVESTED them!!

When is harvest?
Fruits, vegetables and other food plants need time to grow.
The plants start to grow in spring, when the weather is a little warmer. In summer the plants grow bigger and the fruits ripen.
When the fruits are ready to eat they are harvested.

A farmer sows wheat seeds. In spring they start to grow.

When the seeds first grow they are green, as the sun had not yet ripened them.

When the wheat turns golden, it is ready to be harvested.

Why is harvest celebrated?


Harvest Festival is a Christian celebration to give thanks for the crops which have been safely gathered in.

Many Christians have a big display in church to

thank God for the harvest.


They take part in a harvest festival.

It isnt only Christians who want to say thank you....................

What is Sukkot?
Sukkot is a Jewish Festival.
Its celebrated on Thursday 23rd Sept this year.

It is a time to remember when the Jewish people escaped from Egypt lead by Moses. Sukkot is celebrated in the Autumn, it is similar to the Christian festival of Harvest. Jewish people like to thank God for looking after them.

What is Eid al Fitr ?


Eid al-Fitr is a three-day Muslim holiday, it marks the end of Ramadan. September 10th 2010
Ramadan is a holy month, during which Muslims fast from sunup to sundown . Eid al Fitr is a festival of

thanksgiving

to Allah.

It involves wearing finest clothing, feasting and saying prayers.

What is Mabon ?
Mabon is a Pagan festival celebrated in the Northern hemisphere
Thursday 23rd Sept 2010

Pagans mark the end of the harvest season, when day and night are of equal duration (the equinox).
Pagans thank the Goddess for giving enough food to last the winter; harvest festival time. 10
