What is

and how can you use it?

Google Earth doesnt just display maps and photos but has launched an era of satellite tourism.

It is a 3-D interface to the planet.

The images in Google Earth are composed of millions of separate photographs.

Unlike this one made up of only a few hundred tiles with no details

Most were taken from orbit by satellites or the Space Shuttle, with much more detailed shots taken from airplanes

such as this one which are common for many major cities of the world.

but not in more rural areas or foreign countries.

Installation is a snap.

Just do a quick search and tap this link.

Unless you also want these programs installed, be sure to remove the checkmark.

CAUTION

This icon will be placed on your desktop. Simply click on it to open the program.

and this is the program interface that you will see.

There are three versions of Google Earth.

Google Earth Free

Google Earth Plus - $20 / year

Google Earth Pro - $495 / year
In this presentation we will only talk about the free version

How Google Earth works

You must be connected to the internet

The Search Bar

Insert a street address, city, state or a country

Press ENTER or the magnifying glass

and away you go.

Wrigley Field, Chicago, IL

In the lower left hand corner of the photo, is the date it was taken.

In the lower right hand corner of the photo, is the eye altitude above sea level.

With a city elevation of 586 feet above sea level, your true eye height is 3900 feet.

Heres another example

1207 W. 9th St. Sterling IL

Look familiar?

Lets go closer in

Whiteside County Senior Center right here in Sterling

But if we back up a bit and double click on the street.

We go to street view

Here are your navigation and control arrows.

We wont use this one while in Street View

Zoom in or out using this control or the scroll wheel on your

Mouse.

Use this control to look around, left, right, up or down

or Left Click, hold then move your mouse in direction you wish to look.

Our wonderful view across the street

And if we double click on the line on the street

We can move around

The line on the street shows where the Google van, with a 360 degree camera, has traveled.

A glance behind from our new location

Of course, not every street in every city or town has been photographed, but this is still a fantastic way to see the world without driving or flying a single mile.

Were going to look at a few more of the options available, such as the Layers menu.

Here I have the 3D Buildings checked.

Here we are back at Wrigley Field

We are going to use this arrow to change the angle.

At an angle with the 3D building effect

At an angle but without the 3D building effect

If you click photos, you will see tiny icons that depict user submitted photos.

If you click roads, you will see this.

Lets leave the Layers and look at the menu bar.

This natural feature is located in Canada

When you enter these coordinates, you go to Chili in South America.

What you are about to see is NOT natural but is actually made from empty soda bottles. Guess which brand?

Can yougo in closer. Lets make it out?

Entering these coordinates takes us to a place in the San Diego area.

This was a WWII vintage building built by the military using an extremely poor design.

Heres a mystery place where is it?

Hint Its in Brazil

How about now?

Do you see it now?

Closer with 3D effect turned on

The 130-foot tall statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, stands atop the peak of the Corcovado Mountains, overlooking the city. Construction began in 1922 and was completed in 1931.
