Why Online?
Using computer integration for this lesson, students are able to learn the fine motor skills
required for computer usage while they are learning about parts of speech. In the first activity,
provided words allow students to recognize and categorize words into nouns, verbs, adjectives,
and adverbs. In the second part of the activity, students are to type their own words in. By
reading the Mad Libs they create, students will begin to recognize the importance of adjectives
and adverbs to add interest to their own writing.
Online Inquiry:
I began this assignment by utilizing various search engines. I used Google, Webcrawler, Bing,
Yahoo, and InstraGrok. I found that I was getting similar results with all the search engines, so
decided to use Google to continue my searches from there. I began my search with educational
online games and gleaned some information from Edutopia about enhancing lessons with
games. I then searched for adjective and adverb online games. I was not happy with any of the
results that this search generated, so I tried to broaden my search with parts of speech online
games. One of the first hits was a game from Funbrain. I was not happy with the game, but
began to look around on the website. As I clicked through links, I found a Reading Arcade. On
this page, there were four Mad Lib activities. Students would choose words from the provided
word bank to create silly stories. I still wanted students to choose their own words and practice
typing, so I made one more search, this time looking for online mad libs. One of the hits
produced by this search was Wacky Web Tales which provided numerous Mad Libs for
students.
