Km of network and about 7000 stations. Signal & Telecom department of the Railways provides and maintains Signaling systems to ensure safety and operational flexibility in train operations Telecommunication systems to meet the requirements of safety, operations, passenger information systems and administration The telecommunication systems used on Railways are adoptions of systems available outside in a form suitable to Railways. The signaling systems of Railways are unique in the sense they meet the complex requirements of operations involving passenger & freight rakes of various types, speeds of various profiles, sections of various complexities and yards of various lay-outs , ensuring safety as well as flexibility in operations. Evolution of Signaling Systems on Indian Railways from the first generation of Mechanical Signaling to the fourth generation of Electronic Interlocking has been spectacular and yet steady. This evolution is linked to the promotion of safety, enhancement of line capacity and improvement in the flexibility of operations, so that the overall objective of providing safe and efficient transportation system is achieved. The practices of installation of signaling systems on Indian Railways have gone through fundamental change from departmental execution to departmental supervision as per the standards and specifications laid down by Research, Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO) of the Indian Railways and also various zonal railways. Hence, there is the need for having Hand-book , so as to achieve uniformity of installation practices all over the Indian Railways. The publication of Signaling Installaton & Quality Handbook is a timely step n the right direction. This book has been compiled by South Central Railway based on write-ups and drawings given by varius zonal railways followed by deliberatons of Maintenace Study Group and ratification by RDSO.
