Intro: Awesome lego chess set!
(Please vote for me in the contest I really want a laser cutter and there is 0 chance of me ever owning one unless i win :( so please vote for me!!!!!!)

what you need :

Lego's.....a lot

THE BASE : (this step works best on a flat surface) for this you will need a lot of flat pieces (like in second pic)
lay them out to form a square, mine was 10x10 inches (the squares were as big as four square pieces)
the result should look something like this (see 3rd pic)
then just connect the flat pieces together using normally shaped random Lego pieces (you can do a border if you want, mine was green) the last pic shows the completed
base with a border.

Image Notes Image Notes

1. King (the good guy) 1. they are all flat..... (duh)
2. ( the bad guy)

Image Notes Image Notes

1. the flat pieces laid out to form the base of the base. 1. top side of the finished base (notice the green border)

Step 1: The checkered squares

THE CHECKERED SQUARES :
(I recommend doing this step on a flat surface)
Take a bunch of normally shaped black and white(or blue and red :) legos, and form them into squares. (they should be as big as four square pieces) there should be 64
squares.
then just connect them to the base like so. ( alternating colors)

http://www.instructables.com/id/awesome-lego-chess-set/
Image Notes
1. they all form squares
2. there are 64.

Image Notes
1. normally shaped pieces.
2. square piece, four of these make one square.

Image Notes Image Notes

1. the squares are this big 1. half of the squares on on the base

http://www.instructables.com/id/awesome-lego-chess-set/
Image Notes
1. all the squares are on the base

Step 2: The pawn

the pics explain it better than i do :)

Image Notes Image Notes

1. you need these pieces. 1. stack the square ones and add the round thing in the top center.

Image Notes Image Notes

http://www.instructables.com/id/awesome-lego-chess-set/
1. you may have to substitute these for the square ones if you don't have enough. 1. make 7 more white ones and eight black ones (not shown)
2. if you have to substitute for these just place two side by side to form a square
then do the same with the other two,and stack them so the stay together.

Step 3: The rook

follow the pics

Image Notes Image Notes

1. the finished rook. 1. the pieces you need.

Image Notes Image Notes

1. stack 3 squares and put the rectangle thing on the edge. 1. do the same with the other rectangle thing.

http://www.instructables.com/id/awesome-lego-chess-set/
Image Notes Image Notes
1. you should have this. 1. add the last square in the top center like so.

Image Notes
1. add one of these in each corner.
2. when your done just make another white one and 2 black ones.

Step 4: The knight

do what the pics tell you to do.

http://www.instructables.com/id/awesome-lego-chess-set/
Image Notes Image Notes
1. the finished knight. 1. you need these pieces.

Image Notes Image Notes

1. stack 3 squares and put the half square thingy on top like so. 1. then add this piece here.
2. the last square goes right here.
3. make another white one and 2 black ones.

Step 5: The bishop

you can probably guess what you're supposed to do...........follow the pics!!

Image Notes Image Notes

1. the bishop. 1. make a pawn.
2. then just add two of these to the bottom.
3. then make another white one and two black ones.

Step 6: The queen

you know what to do.

http://www.instructables.com/id/awesome-lego-chess-set/
Image Notes
1. first stack 2 square ones, then put 2 other square ones on the top edges.

Image Notes
1. you need these pieces.

Image Notes
1. add 2 of the half-square thingys like this.

http://www.instructables.com/id/awesome-lego-chess-set/
Image Notes
1. then put 2 more half-square thingys on top of the other 2 half-square thingys.
2. and add this circle thing in the center like this.

http://www.instructables.com/id/awesome-lego-chess-set/
Image Notes
1. then add the big rectangle on top like this.
2. now make a black one.

Step 7: The king

...........................................................................

Image Notes Image Notes

1. you need these pieces (the little king dude is not necessary) 1. first take a square and add 4 square ones on top, one square to each corner.

http://www.instructables.com/id/awesome-lego-chess-set/
Image Notes Image Notes
1. add 2 more squares on top, in the middle. 1. stack 2 more squares in the top middle.
2. add 2 of these rectangle things on the side like so.

Image Notes Image Notes

1. put 2 more squares on the top edges. 1. add the last square on the top center.

Image Notes
1. if you want you can add the king on top. (sitting down or standing up)
2. make a black one.

http://www.instructables.com/id/awesome-lego-chess-set/
Step 8: Setting up the board
you probably know how to do this, but just in case.

Image Notes Image Notes

1. position the pawns like this. 1. then put a rook in each corner.
2. white ones go here.
3. black ones go here.

Image Notes Image Notes

1. the knights go on next. 1. then the bishops.
2. black ones.
3. white ones.

http://www.instructables.com/id/awesome-lego-chess-set/
Image Notes
1. the kings and queens go on next.
2. queens go on there color (consider blue being white and red being black)
3. the bad guy, Vladek, or whatever his name is.
4. the good guy doesn't have a name he's just the king. :0 ( go figure)

Hey! Don't you read the instructions your legos come with? They all say don't work on carpeting; use a hard surface instead... :)

Seriously though, great idea! I'll try this with my kids when I get home.

I made one after I saw the original Lego Castle Chess board, that consists of themed minifigs.

Cheers

very cool. my brother has been looking for a lego design for a chess set. this is the first i've seen and looks very doable. one suggestion though. i would use
crazy glue on the pieces so that they don't come apart as you play. another thing you might want to look at (something i realised when we were planning to
make a lego chess) this could kind of serve as a travel chess but without the magents, so you might want to try to design some kind of baord that closes and
stores the pieces. just an idea

lego chess set! i tried this but my cousin decided no lets make a giant building mat. we ended up making a lego hut with a one way door so you can lock
someone in there but i locked him in there and he broke it. >:@

Awesome dude, did you do the board Red/Blue because you didn't have Black/White? or is there another reason?

chessman908 says: Feb 19, 2011. 6:42 AM REPLY

Thanks, yeah the reason I did red and blue was because I didn't have enough black or white :) but once it was finished I thought the blue and red looked
cool, probably looks better in the pics than black and white would.
