Study Highlights

US Demand Pipe demand in the US is projected to rise 2.7 percent yearly to 16.5 billion feet in 2004. Plastic pipe will expand at the fastest pace due to its corrosion resistance, long service life and lower installed costs vis-a-vis concrete, cast iron and other materials. Copper pipe is the footage leader due to its excellent thermal transfer properties and durability, making it ideally suited for refrigeration and indoor potable water applications. Nonetheless, it is expected that by 2009 plastic will overtake copper as the footage leader. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) will remain the premier plastic pipe resin based on the resins durability, stiffness and low cost. Best opportunities are anticipated for high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe as a result of HDPEs flexibility, sturdiness, joint integrity and trench-laying capabilities. Industry Structure and Participants The top seven plastic pipe producers -- J-M Manufacturing (Formosa Plastics), Eagle Pacific Industries, Advanced Drainage Systems, Lamson & Sessions, Hancor, North American Pipe (Westlake Polymers) and Uponor -- together accounted for 37 percent of plastic pipe sales in 1999. Ninety percent of the HDPE high pressure pipe market is controlled by Driscopipe (Phillips Petroleum) and Plexco (Chevron). In other pipe segments, Hanson Building Materials America and CSR Hydro Conduit are leading concrete pipe manufacturers. Bethlehem Steel and LTV Copperweld are major steel pipe producers, while Cerro Copper Products (Marmon) is a dominant manufacturer of copper pipe and tubing for refrigeration and other applications.

billion pounds in 2004 as a result of resin improvements and the continued expansion of large-volume markets such as construction, packaging and motor vehicles. Growing use of engineered plastics and property improvements in commodity polymers will also expand plastics range of applications. Nonetheless, materials substitution as a growth stimulant will be less of a factor due to the already high saturation level of plastics as alternatives to traditional materials such as metals, wood, paper and glass. The US is the largest single plastics market in the world due to the countrys technological prowess, readily available capital, relatively inexpensive feedstock costs and affluent population base. Plastic industry consolidation and restructuring will continue based on excess capacity and low resin prices. The US will remain a net resin exporter but face increased competition from countries with feedstock advantages (e.g., Saudi Arabia) or less developed countries targeting increased plastics production (e.g., China). Low density polyethylene will remain the leading resin, followed by high density polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride and polypropylene. Traditional applications for major plastics are unlikely to undergo major changes over the next half decade. Polyethylene and polypropylene (the polyolefins) have the widest range of applications. Low and high density polyethylene are resin leaders in packaging and consumer applications. Polypropylene will present the best opportunities of all commodity resins due to its low price and density, as well as its ability to mimic the properties of higher cost engineered plastics. Polyvinyl chloride will primarily be used in the manufacture of durable goods and

Communication Duct Communication duct demand will expand at a rapid 10.3 percent annual rate to 440 million feet in 2004, for 41 percent of the total conduit market. Advances reflect the swift deployment of the fiber optic Internet, cable and other communications networks. The deregulation of the communications industry has also elevated competition among the various service providers and stimulated capital investment in this sector. Threats to further growth include competition in the cable market from direct broadcast by satellite (DBS) systems.

SAMPLE PAGE

Telecommunications companies are investing in fiber optic technologies to carry ever increasing amounts of traffic over Internet connections. Estimated industry spending on fiber optic equipment in 1999 approximated $3 billion. Further estimates peg fiber optic equipment expenditures in 2004 at more than $15 billion annually. Demands for increased bandwidth will be the driving force behind a significant rebuilding of the telecommunications network infrastructure. The communications sector can be broadly defined as including telephone systems, the Internet, broadcast and cable television, and related data transmission and communications systems. Advantages of plastic communications duct include light weight, good sealability, low cost and a smooth bore, which greatly facilitates cable insertion in installation or repair.

MARKETS

High density polyethylene pipe demand is projected to increase at a 7.4 percent annual pace to 2.2 billion pounds in 2004 based on opportunities in a number of segments, notably conduit. HighPAGE SAMPLE density polyethylene conduit demand will expand nearly 15 percent per annum to 850 million pounds based on the continued deployment of a national fiber optics network for the Internet, cable television and other information media applications. HDPE conduit advantages include a competitive cost structure, corrosion resistance, flexibility and good joint integrity. HDPE advantages over PVC in conduit uses include a smoother bore, greater abrasion resistance and availability in long lengths, eliminating potential joint leakage problems. The importance of the conduit segment can be illustrated by observing that if conduit was eliminated from the picture, HDPE pipe demand would drop to a four percent annual rate through 2004.

Corrugated HDPE pipe demand will expand at a 4.7 percent annual pace to nearly 430 million pounds in 2004 because of its flexibility, corrosion resistance and installation ease. HDPE corrugated pipe is also produced in continuous flexible coils (in smaller diameters) or rigid pipe in diameters of up to five feet. HDPE pipe competes with concrete, clay, Copper Pipe Demand by Market cast iron, polyvinyl chloride and reinforced

Research & Development The maturity of most segments of the pipe industry leads most research and development efforts to focus on refinements to existing production processes, joining techniques, or materials or additive improvements. Research in the plastic pipe segment is focused on the variety of resins, compounds and additives that may be used. Areas of plastic pipe research include improved designs (e.g., ribs for increased crush strength), resins (e.g., improved grades of high density polyethylene) and processing technologies (e.g., coextrusion, foaming and rotomolding). Particular emphasis is being placed on developing improved grades of polyvinyl chloride for high pressure applications. INDUSTRY STRUCTURE

SAMPLE PAGE
Among the developments in polyvinyl chloride resins are biaxially oriented PVC pipe. The specially designed resin is said to make these pipes stronger than regular PVC pipes, allowing for thinner-walled pipe in potable water distribution. Biaxially oriented PVC pipe is much lighter than steel pipe of equivalent strength, allowing it to increase market penetration at the expense of steel. Another PVC development is the greater use of foamed core PVC pipe, which offers a saving in material used and reductions in energy use. The pipe generally has a three-layer construction, with the foamed PVC sandwiched between an inner and outer layer of solid PVC. The foamed plastic serves as insulation (both thermal and acoustic), making the pipe useful for transport of low-temperature materials or for waste pipe. Upgraded polyethylene resins improve pipe strength and allow for extensions of applications. For example, the European company Mabo (acquired by Pipelife in 1999) has designed the worlds thickest HDPE pipe. With a wall thickness of 100 millimeters, the large diameter pipe is expected to contend with steel pipe in carrying high-capacity transmission lines.

Plastic & Competitive Pipe
Advances in US pipe demand will be stimulated by the expansion or replacement of deteriorating potable water, sewer, drainage and other pipe networks.
