NB! Each 90-minute webinar will take place every other Wednesday. ETRC will host fist two webinars on the 9th and 23d of January. A certificate is offered to teachers who attend four live sessions from six seminars. The course will cover a variety of topics for teachers of English or future teachers of English around the world. Participants are encouraged to join the associated Ning (http://www.shapingenglish.ning.com) to participate in discussions, view or download video and other materials from the sessions, and access recordings of the webinars. As the number of work stations that can access the webinars is limited in Ukraine, we invite all those who are interested in participating in these ELT webinars to register as members of a viewing group at ETRC. We will join the webinars on one of our computers and project the video on a screen so that the participants could get a better view and an opportunity to fully engage with the webinars. Wednesday, January 9 3:00 4:30 PM Webinars Series 9.1 - Proverbs and Quotables: Using Very Short Texts in Language Learning Presenter: Kevin McCaughey, Regional English Language Officer in Washington, DC Proverbs are great texts for language classes. They are wise or witty, or both. They have stood the test of time. They come from every corner of the world--sometimes bridging cultures, sometimes highlighting differences. Best of all they are short. Very short. Which means they can be used for quick tasks that require few materials and little preparation time. In this webinar teachers will actively take part in a range of activities based on super short texts. Please see details at http://shapingenglish.ning.com/events/9-1-8 Tuesday, January 15 from 4:00 5:30 PM Workshop: Student Test-Taking Strategies Presenter: Eve Smith, Senior English Language Fellow, U.S. Department of State Testing is an integral part of a learners experience; however, some learners feel inordinate amounts of pressure when faced with an upcoming exam. When learners come to us, we frequently assume that someone else, somewhere, has taught them how to study for and take exams. Reviewing test-taking strategies with students is worthwhile because it may reduce classroom anxiety and foster motivation. Wednesday, January 16 from 4:00 5:30 PM Workshop: Student Test-Taking Strategies Presenter: Eve Smith, Senior English Language Fellow, U.S. Department of State (The workshop is a repetition of the one that will be delivered on Tuesday, January 15) Wednesday, January 23 3:00 4:30 PM Webinars Series 9.2 Cultivating Habits of Listening Presenter: Joyce Milambiling, Associate Professor at the University of Northern Iowa, USA It is widely acknowledged that listening is one of the most important skills that language learners can develop. This session draws on the concepts of "habits of mind" and "habits of attention," focusing on teaching approaches and practical activities that teachers can use to encourage and enable students to approach the skill of listening in a second language more mindfully. A related purpose of the webinar is for teachers to learn about techniques that will help learners of English minimize distractions that can take away from effective listening. Please see details at http://shapingenglish.ning.com/events/9-2-8 Friday, January 25 from 3:00 4:30 PM Presentation/workshop: English language teaching and English through Drama (ETD) Presenter: Diana Kovtunenko (Diana Aishe), director of the theater project Aparte (Dnipropetrovsk) in 2008-09, currently is a drama directing student at I. Karpenko-Karyy Kyiv National University of Theatre, Cinema and Television The presentation will introduce audience to the ETD method and will help them explore its pros and cons depending on the students age, level, his or her abilities, emotional characteristics and, what is especially important, goals. A part of presentation will be dedicated to the texts chosen for drama language development. During the workshop follow-up activities will be demonstrated. As my ETD course is composed of different stages - from actors trainings and prerehearsal readings to the play performed on stage, the workshop will deal only with some parts of the full course, but interactive drills and samples of work will be included. The last part of the workshop will turn into a real performance so as each participant will be involved in a drama action.

Tuesday, January 29 from 4:00 5:30 PM Workshop: Increasing Classroom Interactions Presenter: Eve Smith, Senior English Language Fellow, U.S. Department of State Increasing classroom interaction can be difficult. Often, teachers feel that students arent engaged in the activities; however, this might be due to our own lack of clear guidance in the activities we ask them to complete rather than disinterest on the part of the student. The presenter will discuss how to create task-based activities that stimulate discussions and interactions as a group in the classroom. Wednesday, January 30 from 4:00 5:30 PM Workshop: Grammar Games Presenter: Eve Smith, Senior English Language Fellow, U.S. Department of State How do we make grammar fun? How can we teach grammar in a more communicative way? At 16:50, ten members of the newly established book club at the ETRC together with Senior Fellow, Eve Smith were happy and excited to speak via Skype with Philip Smith, the author of the book Walking Through Walls. The authors responses, given in the same humor and elegance found in his prose, entertained both the skeptics and believers of his story. Enjoying themselves thoroughly, most members of the book club stayed a half hour after finishing the Skype call to continue the discussion inspired by the unforgettable experience of crossing time zones and cultures.

January is National Staying Healthy Month, Hot Tea Month, National Skating Month, National Mentoring Month, National Thank You Month and National Hobby Month in America. January 1 New Years Day. New Year's Eve is when all the fun and festivities are. We see out the old year and ring in the new. While it is often thought of as a time to drink and be merry, many people take it as an opportunity to eat and be merry. New Years' Day on the other hand, is a time to relax and enjoy the start of a bright and promising new year....a new beginning. It is a time to be with family. January 1 is the first day of the year in the Gregorian calendar. http://www.fathertimes.net/traditions.htm http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/7214/newyear.htm January 3 Humiliation Day. Humiliation Day is not a day to humiliate someone. Rather, it should be viewed as a time to recognize the negativity of humiliating someone or a group of people. http://www.examiner.com/article/humiliation-day-a-day-for-humility http://www.printablecalendar2013.org/humiliation-day.htm January 4 - Trivia Day. January 7 - Rizdvo (Christmas) in Ukraine is an annual commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ and a widely observed holiday. Thats why Ukrainians celebrate Christmas on January 7. http://ua-traveling.com/en/article/christmas-ukraine http://www.uazone.net/holidays/christmas.html January 14th - The Old Style New Year. The Old New Year or the Orthodox New Year (Ukrainian: ), is an informal traditional Orthodox holiday, celebrated as the start of the New Year by the Julian calendar. Christmas Time is finally here, It only comes but once a year. And it's a time to spread good cheer, To those we love and hold so dear. Christmas Time is a time of glee, A time when peace and love run free. A time for those like you and me, To sit beneath the Christmas Tree. Christmas Time is a time of joy, A time to sit back and enjoy. The smile on each girl and boy, As they play with a Christmas Toy. Christmas Time is a time to share, The passing of another year. Christmas Time is a time for song, A time for us to get along. Christmas Time is a time to pray, Put love and kindness on display. Show compassion along the way, Christmas Time should be everyday.
