ENGL 104: Listening & Speaking

I. Course Description:
This obligatory course is designed to present you
with an opportunity to improve and test your listening and
speaking skills in American English. It aims at training
students in listening to native speakers on a wide range of
topics from topics about the importance of listening in
general, listening to short Introduction videos, dialogues
between two speakers on different topics, the UNs SDGs
and success stories of people who have made it in the
world. It also enhances students’ speaking skills by
involving students in tasks, activities and projects that elicit
speaking and exchange of ideas and views.

II. Course Objectives


-To improve students' listening skills by listening to different kinds of videos and audios.
- To understand a spoken text in English.
- To develop accurate grammar, pronunciation and fluency in American English through
listening and speaking.
- To help students express themselves fluently in English.
-To improve collaborative learning among students in the same classroom
-To collaborate with international students studying at Shenandoah University to work on shared
projects.
-To develop effective interpersonal, small group, and public speaking skills.
-To create videos and which students introduce themselves, and other videos on topics they have
listened to, but also to add and be creative.
III.Course Outcomes:
-Students are able to communicate in English.
-Students are able to express themselves in English.
-Students are able to understand authentic mini-talks, conversations, and lectures delivered in
American English.
-Students are able to enlarge their vocabulary by making use of new terms and phrase.
-Students are able to answer all kinds of questions about a topic they have listened to.
-Students are able to speak creatively about their concerns about a topic they have heard others
speak about.

-All Clear 2 : Listening and Speaking by: Helen Kalkstein Fragiadakis
-On Line Videos such as: Alex Lion's Active Listening, and Effective Listening Videos
- (Media) Sinead O’Conner and her song "Nothing Compares to You",
-Top Ten Rules for Success, by Barak Obama
-Top Five Rules for Success, by Michael Obama
-Listening to short dialogues (TOEFL style)
-Listening to the UNs SDGs videos
-Listening to themselves, and classmates to discover mistakes and correct them.
VI. Home Work, Quizzes, Speaking(Responses), Exams and Projects 90% :
Students should expect extensive weekly homework assignments. On average, students are
expected to spend two to three hours on English outside of class; listening to You Tube videos
related to their topics, looking up new vocabulary and taking notes for every class meeting to do
well in both classroom discussions, quizzes and exams.

IN-CLASS ACTIVITY/PARTICIPATION& ATTENDANCE 10%


For a speaking course, class discussions are a vital part of it as we will all participate in a
stimulating exchange of insights, ideas, and opinions through our group work or different class
dialogues. You should read the assigned text and prepare yourself for these discussions before
class. Inactive attendance will negatively affect your performance and grade. Therefore, you are
encouraged to participate as well as respect your classmates’ participation. You will be asked to
leave the class if you show any disrespect to our classroom community.

Weekly Schedule:
Week 1 Orientation
Weeks 2&3&4: Unit 1 (Getting Cold Feet) & You Tube Videos on Active Listening and
Effective Listening& short dialogue exchanges& creating an introduction video of their own.
Weeks 5&6&7: Unit 2 (Pulling an All-nighter) & You Tube video by Barak Obama
Midterm Speaking & Listening Paper Exam: 30% & Oral/Speaking Exam 10% & Participation
10%.
Weeks 8&9&10: You Tube Video by Michelle Obama & Sinead O’Connor videos and
Wikipedia page& Unit 3 Are We Couch Potatoes?
Weeks 11&12: The UNs SDGs, The Project/Revision &Final Speaking Exam10%
Grades:
Midterm Paper Based Exam 30% & Speaking/Oral Exam 10%& Participation 10% & Final
Paper Based Exam: 40% & Final Oral Exam 10%
