ABSTRACT

BAJUYO, IVEIL MAE G. Central Mindanao University, University Town, Musuan, Bukidnon. March 2012.Carbon Sequestration Potential of Mangrove Plantation in Taytay, El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental.

Adviser: Dr. Jose Hermis P. Patricio This study was conducted mainly to assess the amount of biomass density and carbon stored above, below and in the soil in mangrove plantation in Taytay, El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental. This was conducted from October to December 2011. The potential for carbon sequestration was determined in two carbon pools (trees and soil) from four sites of mangrove plantation. Field measurements and laboratory analysis were used to measure the biomass density and carbon stored in the samples. Statistical analysis using T-test was used to compare the carbon stored between sites and the amount of carbon stored in soil and trees. The study revealed that mangrove plantation under study had a total mean of biomass density of 946.94 Mg/ha. Station 4 got the highest with 288.44 Mg C/ha while Station 2 had the lowest biomass density with 198.51 Mg C/ha. The total mean value of carbon stored in the study area was 744.00 Mg C/ha. Among the four stations, Station 4 had the highest carbon stored with 1,436.62 Mg C/ha while Station 3 got the lowest with 479.89 Mg C/ha. Among the carbon pools, soil had the highest mean carbon stored which was 390.97 Mg C/ha. Using an alpha level of 0.05, the study showed that there is significant difference between above, below ground biomass, and between trees and soil in terms of carbon stored. The potential carbon stored in the entire mangrove plantation at the time of the study, ranging from 7,673.92 Mg C and 22,985.92 Mg C with an average of 11,904 Mg C.

In order to enhance the mangrove plantation in the area covered in the study, the community should continue protecting and conserving the mangrove plantation. Enhancement planting is recommended especially species other than Rhizophora, to areas that are partly denuded in order to further enhance the potential of the plantation to sequester carbon and mitigate climate change.
