ABSTRACT TABARNO, KLENNA MARIE T. Central Mindanao University, University Town, Musuan, Bukidnon. October 2011.

EVALUATION OF WATER QUALITY OF MATUNOG SPRING RESORT IN NORTH POBLACION, MARAMAG, BUKIDNON.

Adviser: Dr. Laarni F Lacandula The study was conducted to primarily assess the quality of water in Matunog Spring Resort North Poblacion, Maramag Bukidnon, on February 2-17, 2011. Levels of Biological oxygen demand, Chlorine, pH, temperature and E.coli in pool water and the two separate spring sources were determined in three sampling stations (Station 1-Pool, Station 2-Spring 1 and Station 3-Spring 2). A semi structured interview schedule was also conducted among households and respondents who visited the area to provide additional information on the study. Results of the study in station 1 which is a pool water showed that BOD, chlorine, pH, temperature and E.coli after chlorination are within the standard set by DENR for class B water. Therefore pool water is acceptable for recreational uses. Observed number of E.coli was present before chlorination particularly in first sampling period which still be classified as satisfactory water. For spring water in station 2 and 3 results showed that BOD, chlorine, pH and temperature are within the standard set by DENR for class B water but E.coli exceeded the standard set by DENR which indicates that the spring water is not safe as a source water for recreational uses. Generally, Matunog Spring resort is not acceptable based on DENR standards. Result of the interview showed that people who visited the area were not satisfied on the management of the resort since there is no proper waste management in the area and the pool is cemented and also some of the respondents experienced health problems that may have been caused by the water of Matunog Spring Resort.

It is then recommended that the Local government of North Poblacion, Maramag Bukidnon must check the health and sanitary condition of the resort and give information to the residents in the area who used the water in the spring for them to be aware on the quality of water they are using. The owner must also conduct periodic test of the quality of their water for them to eliminate the impact that may possibly affect their business. Lastly, the owner must provide garbage bins so that users will not directly throw their garbage anywhere; and they must have proper segregation of waste.
