ABSTRACT

CIPRIANO, JORGE ANDREW B. Central Mindanao University, University Town, Musuan, Bukidnon. March 2012. Estimation of Carbon Dioxide Emissions of Private Vehicles in Maramag, Bukidnon.

Adviser: Dr. Jose Hermis P. Patricio The study primarily aimed to determine the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by privately-owned vehicles in North and South Poblacion, Maramag, Bukidnon. This was conducted on December 2011. A socio-demographic and perception survey using a pre-tested questionnaire was undertaken involving households owning vehicles in the study area as respondents. Carbon calculator software developed by the Manila Observatory (2004) was used to input required data so as to determine monthly and per capita CO2 emissions. Most of the respondents were 31-40 years old, males, had been residing in Maramag for 21 years, had a household size of 4-6 persons, college graduates, and had been earning a monthly income of PhP10,000.00-14,999.00. Almost all of them were aware about global warming and climate change and more than three-fourth knew about the Philippine Clean Air Act (RA 8749). However, only a little more than half of them were aware about the enactment of the Climate Change Act. The study also revealed that among the sampled vehicles, vans had the highest monthly and per capita CO2 emissions at 255 kg per month and 58 kg per capita, respectively. In terms of fuel type, diesel-powered vehicles had the highest CO2 emissions at 248 kg per month, and 51 kg per capita. It is recommended that the DENR-EMB should revisit RA 8749 to consider setting standards for CO2 emissions specifically from vehicles. LGU Maramag also has to institute

immediately air quality monitoring program including CO2 emissions both from mobile and stationary sources.
