CHAPTER 1

PROBLEM AND THE SCOPE

Introduction

 The researchers choose Barangay Binlod and the current research

topic, “Water Quality Assessment of the BIRWASA System in
Binlod as Potable Water Supply”, as their focus of study.

 the researchers plan to conduct a quality assessment, observe,

and test the water source to determine whether it is within the
standard parameters set for safe-drinking water.
THE PROBLEM
Statement of the problem

 The study aims to determine the potential and safety of Binlod Rural
Waterworks and Sanitation Inc. (BIRWASA)’s water system as potable water
supply for the community’s use, awareness, and improvement. The results of
this study will be used as bases for the actions that will be undertaken by the
organization in order to further improve their services.
THE PROBLEM
Statement of the problem

 This study analyses and tests samples from two BIRWASA water Reservoirs;
Reservoir A in Upper Binlod, and Reservoir B in Oman.

Specifically, this study aims to:

1. The physicochemical characteristic of the water of BIRWASA in terms of:

1.1. clarity;
1.2. color;
1.3. temperature; and
1.4. pH level?
THE PROBLEM
Statement of the problem

2. The microbiological test result of the BIRWASA Water in terms of:

2.1. Total Coliform; and
2.2. Thermo-tolerant coliform?

3. What is the recommendation for the community?

4. What is the recommendation for the BIRWASA association?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
 The source of potable water is currently depleting in the present
years due to the increasing demand and destructive anthropogenic
activities. Water management and water preservation actions
cannot quickly solve the multiple water related problems.

 Locale (Residents) – This study would help the residents’ awareness of the
current condition of the fresh water supply and its potential as a potable water
source.

 BIRWASA Association – This study can help the association determine what
steps to take next in furthering their service to the community.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
 Researchers (Students) – This study would help the researchers expand their
horizon, widen their knowledge about the topic, and acquire experiences that
can be of use to their future careers.

 Future Researchers – This study may serve as a guide or basis for future
researchers where they can get information or may use it as references related
to their future studies.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
PROJECT DESIGN

 This study, entitled “Water Quality Assessment of BIRWASA

System in Binlod as Potable Water Supply” uses a qualitative and
quantitative research design to evaluate the portability of the
BIRWASA water system.
 The Study aims to know if the water supply that the BIRWASA
water system provides can pass the standards for the
physicochemical and bacteriological tests.
 This research utilizes ocular observation and laboratory results as bases for
its findings.
Gathering Data
The researchers conducted the physiochemical property test of the water sample at
the site of the households nearest to the reservoirs in sitio upper binlod and in sitio
oman.
 Water samples were collected from the tap of two households nearest to each
reservoir and the sample was then delivered back to the RHU to be sent to the
Environmental Health Laboratory Services Cooperative in Calamba, Cebu City for
bacteriological testing.
 The researchers tested and observed the physicochemical characteristics of the
BIRWASA water Supply on the morning of May 6, 2021.The researchers used
laboratory gloves to get samples from the water in order to eradicate handling risk of
the water. The color and clarity used ocular observation.
The temperature of the water was measured three times using the mercury
thermometer on the site
The chemical characteristics, pH level was measured using the pH device. Each test
was conducted three times to ensure the accuracy and precision of the results and
divided into three to come up with the average level.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
BIRWASA. Binlod Rural Waterworks Association Inc.,- a water supply
distribution system established by non-governmental organizations and
volunteers in barangay Binlod.
Potable/Safe Water- water with quality within the standard limits set in
the Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water (PNSDW) of 2017 for
acceptability and health aspects.
Drinking Water- water intended for direct human consumption or for use
in preparation and related processes.
Physicochemical Assessment- A combination of assessing the
characteristics of water by its physical appearance and chemical content.
 Physicochemical Parameters- This refers to the physical and chemical
parameters that are used as a bases of measurement to assess the quality of
water like color, clarity, pH, mineral and chemical content.
Contamination- a general term referring to the presence
of substance found in water that make the water less
desirable or unfit for drinking.
 Bacteriological Test- a test done in order to determine
whether a body of water is a habitat or not of a certain
bacterium.
Potential of Hydrogen, pH.- It refers to the measure of
hydrogen ion concentration in water.
Water Assessment- It is the overall process of evaluation
of the physical, chemical and biological nature of the water.
