Statement of the Problem

In general, this investigatory project entitled “Production and Utilization of

Microbe Balls from Mangrove Areas of Lemery in Pansipit Sewage Water

Treatment” was conducted to produce and utilize microbe balls for sewage water

treatment.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the microbes present in microbe balls after fermentation process?

2. What is the quality of the Pansipit Sewage Water in the three selected stations in

Lemery Town Proper in terms of:

2.1 Dissolved Oxygen (DO) level;

2.2 Power of Hydrogen (pH) level;

2.3 Temperature;

2.4 Nitrite content; and

2.5 Phosphate content?

3. What is the effect of microbe balls to the quality of Pansipit Sewage Water or three

selected stations in Lemery Town Proper in terms of:

3.1 Dissolved Oxygen (DO) level;

3.2 Power of Hydrogen (pH) level;

3.3 Temperature;

3.4 Nitrite content; and

3.5 Phosphate content?

4. Is there any significant difference in the quality of Pansipit Sewage Water before and

after the treatment?

5. Is there any significant difference in the quality of Pansipit Sewage Water if the

number of microbe balls is varied?

6. Is there any significant difference in the quality of Pansipit Sewage Water in

controlled and experimental set-ups?

Scope, Limitation and Delimitation

This study sought to determine the effectiveness of microbe balls to improve the

quality of Pansipit Sewage Water.

The data gathered was based on the developed 5g with the diameter of 2 cm

microbe balls in mangrove area which are fermented for 14 days.

Water samples were collected from the 3 selected stations in Lemery Town

Proper as suggested by Municipal Environment and natural Resources Office (MENRO)

namely Station 1- Rajah Mtanda St.; Station 2- Atienza St.; and Station 3- Brgy. Wawa

Ibaba.

Five water parameters such as dissolved oxygen level (DO), power of Hydrogen

level (pH), temperature, nitrite and phosphate content were tested. Dissolved Oxygen

(DO) level was tested using the DO meter while the pH level was measured using pH

meter. Temperature is also measured through the DO meter which is expressed in ℃.

Colorimeter was used to determine the nitrite content and UV spectrophotometer was
used in testing the phosphate content. Preliminary microbial identification was also done

by the experts to ensure the presence of essential microbe in the balls.

The experiment was done at the laboratory of National Freshwater Fisheries

Research and Development Center in a span of four days.

The study is limited on the sewage water of the three selected stations in Lemery

Town Proper. Also, it does not govern soil samples from mangrove areas other than in

Cuta River at Lemery. In addition, water sewages in Lemery that do not directly flow to

the Pansipit River excluded. It is also limited to the five water parameters involved in

this study.

Significance of the Study

This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of microbe balls in

improving the quality of wastewater in the sewages which are connected to the Pansipit

River in Lemery Town Proper. Specifically, this study may be beneficial to the following:

Community;

This study will be beneficial to the community for it will improve different water

parameters of sewages that are connected to the Pansipit River. Thus, it will raise a

better quality of water and will yield a safe and healthy environment through eliminating

pathogenic organisms in wastewater thus reducing the number of water-related

diseases.

Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO);

Microbe Balls can be a great help in improving the quality of fresh water

specifically Pansipit River which can serve as a new water treatment agent to treat

wastewater. In this connection, this study will serve as a natural and organic water

cleaning agent that can be adapted and utilized by this municipal sector to treat water

forms around the area thus yielding to a better water quality and a richer biodiversity of

the river.

Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR);

The results of this study will be beneficial to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic

Resources (BFAR) in terms of providing water agent that has the potential to treat

wastewater which can improve the quality of different water forms like Pansipit River

thus improving the biodiversity in this river and make it to become more suitable place

for different migratory fishes like Maliputo (Caranx ignobilis) and aquatic species.

Future researchers;

This study will provide knowledge and new information for future researchers that

can help them get ideas for creating their own research. It can also serve as one of their

references and related study for their own research paper.

Hypotheses

H o 1There is no significant difference in the quality of Pansipit Sewage Water

before and after the treatment.

the number of microbe balls is varied.

H o 3There is no significant difference in the quality of Pansipit Sewage Water in

controlled and experimental set-ups.
