ACE: Transformation Matrix All geometrical transformations can be represented by Matrices.

1) A Translation moves all the points of an object on a plane the same distance and in the same direction. It is defined by a horizontal followed by a vertical movement. Define a column matrix ( 2 x 1 Matrix ) that represent a Translation. x x Note: A point (x, y) can be written as the column matrix . If is pre y y multiplied by a 2 x 2 matrix, the result will be another column matrix describing a different point. 2) A Reflection is defined by its axis of reflection or the axis of symmetry or the line of reflection or simply, the mirror line. Under a Reflection, a figure and its image are symmetrical about the mirror line. (i) Find a 2 x 2 Matrix that represents a Reflection in the x-axis. a b Hint: Let the Matrix be c d Find a 2 x 2 Matrix that represents a Reflection in the y-axis. Extend this to the other types of Reflection that you have managed to research.

(ii) 3)

A Rotation is a properly defined by its centre, angle and direction (clockwise or anticlockwise) of rotation. The centre of rotation is the only invariant point (the point whose position remained unchanged after the rotation). Find a 2 x 2 Matrix that represents a 180 Rotation about the origin. Extend this to the other types of Rotation that you have managed to research.

4)

For further extension of your ACE work, you can go and research on all the 2 x 2 Matrices that represent Enlargement, Shear and Stretch. Find out the definition of all these three types of geometrical transformation, and how Matrix is used to represent them under different conditions.

Prepare a minimum two pages written report for your research work (Maximum 5 ACE) on Transformation Matrix. It would be good if you can illustrate your findings with suitable examples, diagrams, and if possible, animation work through suitable IT software. Please remember to record down all your references. Submit your work to me at anglc@hc.edu.sg latest by Mar-14 (Mon).
