I am currently researching the Newsboys Strike of 1899 for a National History Day Project. My thesis for the project is that The Newsboy Strike of 1899 was a turning point in American history because the strike affected societys view of working children. It also explores the rights and benefits that working children received, and the impact of this strike, and others, in terms of introducing legislation designed to protect children, such as the Keating-Owen Labor Act. I am inquiring if you know something about this specific topic. Particularly, if you have any information about how New York City's society acted or viewed these newsboys in response to the 1899 strike. If this specific information is not available, any other information regarding the Newsboy Strike of 1899 would be very helpful as well. If you have any questions, or know of someone who can assist me, please feel free to contact me at claireengelhaupt@gmail.com. I highly appreciate your time and effort. I agree with your thesis! According to newspapers of the time (those against which the newsies did NOT strike), much of New York society was sympathetic to the childrens cause, and the successful compromise that ended the strike paved the way for reforms in child labor during the early 20th century. For more information, Id look at the chapter on newsies in David Nasaws book CHILDREN OF THE CITY: AT WORK & AT PLAY. Also, look online through the archives of THE NEW YORK TIMES (www.nytimes.com) during the last two weeks of July, 1899. And if you havent yet read it, check out the NEWSIES Study Guide:

I was hoping it would not be too much to ask to list you as someone I have contacted and interviewed. I was also hoping you could answer a few more of my questions. I am currently researching why The New York World and The New York Journal finally made the compromise that they did with the Newsboys as well if the compromise largely impacted the very small profit the newboys made. I have had a little bit of trouble finding enough information to prove whether the Newsboys were largely affected or not by being able to sell the papers back to the companies. Again thank you so much for your time and effort thus far. Although their profit per paper was smaller, the newsies could sell enough Journals and Worlds (the dominant papers) to earn their living by volume, at least for another couple of decades, with no risk by taking extra papers. Feel free to list me as needed. Cheers, Ken On Thu, Jan 10, 2013 at 5:14 PM, "Claire Engelhaupt" <claireengelhaupt@gmail.com> wrote: KenYour help has been great.
