Types of Student Accommodation - Furnished rooms

This document will inform you on the different types of student accommodation available. All rooms
offered in this document are fully furnished. With this document we will guide you in choosing the right
accommodation for you. First, we give you some criteria to think about (page 1-3). Secondly, we will show
you pictures of the rooms, the prices and, if available, a link to a video in which students show their room.
Please note that all rooms are available for maximum of one year only. In case you are interested in room

VUNET OPTIONS
In VUnet you will need select a top 3. In the description below you will see specified which type of
accommodation is available for which type of student (Bachelor, 1 year Master or 2 year Master). You can
recognize the options by the housing corporations name. For instance the DUWO Short Stay rooms in
VUnet are called ‘DUWO: all properties short stay furnished’. So for DUWO Short Stay rooms you cannot
book a specific location yet via VUnet, this will be possible in a later stage in the process.

BUDGET
The price of accommodation varies between €340 and € 900 per month. Utilities (water/ electricity/
internet) are included in the price. When you choose a room with a low rent, you will have to share your
facilities (kitchen and/or bathroom). A flexible attitude is desirable when sharing a bathroom and/ or
kitchen.

SOCIAL
In case you would like to meet many students, have dinners and/or drinks together, we advise you to
choose for a room with a shared kitchen and/or bathroom. If you are more reserved and if it is important
to you to be by yourself, we suggest to select a private, self-contained room. If you would like both we
advise you to book a private room at Uilenstede since there are many students living here and it is a lively
student community with many facilities. There is less social interaction between students at the other
locations in Amsterdam.
FACILITIES
As a student in the Netherlands, it is very common to have your own bedroom while sharing your facilities
(kitchen and/or bathroom). We have a wide range of options available in terms of shared facilities. Below
you can find a quick overview (when facilities are shared, the number in the figure below depicts the total
number, including yourself):

LOCATION
We have student accommodation available in different locations in Amsterdam. Although you might be
dreaming of living in the city center with its canals and tall houses, you may wish to reconsider since it is
mostly wealthy Dutch people or tourists staying there. In contrast to the city center, Uilenstede is located
in a very green area, in between two parks and close to the Amsterdam forest. Krelis Louwenstraat ,
Cornelis Lelylaan, Xior, The Student Hotel and The Fizz Spartaan (West-side), Eerste Ringdijkstraat , Pierre
Lallementstraat and OurCampus/OurDomain Amsterdam Diemen are located in genuine Amsterdam
areas; mixed population and close to a supermarket and public transport. Please note that De
Boelelaan/Groningenstraat is accommodation in a residential area and not suitable for parties. ( but De
Boelelaan / Groningenstraat is very close to VU Amsterdam  )

STATE OF THE BUILDING
Some students prefer a modern, clean and fresh building, if this is the case, we advise you to choose for
accommodation at the following locations: Pierre Lallementstraat, Eerste Ringdijkstraat, Krelis
Louwenstraat, Cornelis Lelylaan, Xior, The Fizz Spartaan or OurCampus/OurDomain Amsterdam Diemen.
The rooms in Uilenstede 168-224 are renovated during the Summer of 2018 and 2019, so these rooms will
also be modern and fresh. For the other building at Uilenstede it is important to note that it was built in the
seventies. It is old fashioned and a bit outdated and suitable for students who are looking for budget
accommodation.

COUPLES
We have very limited rooms available for couples. Most of the couples rooms are part of DUWO
Accommodate and are located at Cornelis Lelylaan, Pierre Lallementstraat and Uilenstede. We also have a
few couples rooms at Naritaweg (Xior). We will assign couples accommodation also on first come first serve
basis determined by the application date. You will need to let us know via studentaccommodation@vu.nl
that you want to book a couples room.

So, based on these criteria and your priorities, you should be able to decide which room will meet your

We arranged a special deal with ‘The Student Hotel’ in Amsterdam-West. The Student Hotel offers fully-
serviced, state-of-the-art accommodation just as if you were staying in a hotel. This includes: A personal
bike, cleaning and change of bed-linen, 24 hours reception & security and use of the gym, study room,
game room, library and other common areas. Optional services: Meal plan, room cleaning service, bed
linen, kitchen utensils sets. The room reserved for you is a ‘Standard room’.
