Genetic testing uses molecular methods to determine if someone has a medical disorder or carries a genetic illness. There are different categories of genetic disorders, including single gene recessive, single gene dominant, single gene sex-linked, multifactorial, chromosomal, and mitochondrial. The role of genetic counselor is to help a family understand the risks of having a child with a genetic disorder and other related information for a person to make decisions suitable fir their cultural religious or moral beliefs. PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a laboratory procedure to produce many copies of a specific DNA sequence.

This content of this lesson does not relate to any course that I am currently enrolled in. The information in this section could be related to biology, anatomy and physiology, Human Body Systems, and Principles of the Biomedical Sciences.

What did you find interesting in this unit? Explain.

The most interesting part of this lesson was the information about and the research on the ethical dilemmas surrounding genetic testing. Its very interesting to learn about peoples different views on the topics, and then be able to research them and develop my own opinions on the same topics.

Did anything in this unit inspire you or change your thinking in terms of what you want to study in college/what career you will choose? Explain how or why not.

Nothing in this unit changed my thinking about what I want to study in the future. At best, it confirmed my thoughts about the field that I wish to pursue. Nothing was so interesting as to cause me to want to focus on it, but the lesson did remind me of the complexity of the human body and its systems.

Explain how you took on the role of one or more of the following in this unit: scientist, engineer, mathematician, researcher.

The process of experimenting to find out if I was a PTC taster or not was a situation where I filled the role of a scientist and a researcher.
