DESIGN OF TRICKLING FILTER

Datas given: Total flow per day = 300 x 50 = 1500 liters/day BOD of sewage = 150 mg/liter Datas assumed: Organic loading = Range between (900 to 2200) kg/ha-m/day Hydraulic loading = range between (22 to 440) Million liter/ha/day Solution: Total BOD present in sewage to treat = 150 x 15000 x 10-6 = 2.25 kg/day As assumed value of organic loading = 900 kg/ha-m/day Total volume of the filter = 2.25 900 = 0.25 x 10-3ha-m = 25 m3 ( 1 ha = 10000 m2 ) Providing the depth of the filter is 1.5 m Area of the tank = Volume = 25 = 16.67 m2 Depth 1.5 Providing the circular TRICKLING FILTER of only one unit Area= x D2 4 16.67 x 4 = d2 THEN D = 4.67 = 6m dia. THEN check for hydraulic loading Surface area required = Total sewage to be treated Hydraulic loading = 15000 x 10-6 16.67 x 10-4 = 8.998 M liter/ha/day Desgn summary Diameter = 6m Area of tank = 28.27 m2 Depth of tank = 1.5 m

By other method we can also calculate the surface area 2)But the value is not coming in the range then we have to redesign section By giving hydraulic loading Hydraulic loading = total sewage flow in Million liter Surface area required in hacter -6 22 = 15000 x 10 Surface area Surface area = 15000 x 10-6 22 = 68.18 m2 Then diameter of filter D2 = 68.18 x 4 = 9.31 m = 12 m provided Design summary Depth of tank = Diameter of tank = Area of tank = 1.5 m 12 m 130 m2
