Council President Todd Gloria commented on the City Council's vote to let stand the veto of appointments to the San Diego Unified Port District Board of Commissioners. By not overriding the veto, the Council is effectively cutting the City's ability to provide input on the Port's budget and capital improvement program. The decision also disenfranchises not just residents of District Four but all San Diego residents by denying them representation on the Port board for the next several months. The Rules Committee will discuss Port issues on March 6th, after which the Council President will consider new appointments.

Council President Gloria Comments on Veto Override Vote
SAN DIEGO, CA (February 11, 2013) Council President Todd Gloria today issued a statement following the City Councils vote to let the veto stand of the appointments to the San Diego Unified Port District Board of Commissioners. While I understand the request from some colleagues to wait on these important appointments until the District Four vacancy is filled, that action effectively cuts out our Citys ability to weigh in effectively on the Ports budget and, more importantly, give direction on the Ports Capital Improvement Program. With the decision today, we are disenfranchising not just the residents of District Four, but all residents of the City of San Diego by not giving them representation on the Port for the next several months. The Rules Committee has scheduled a workshop on Port-related issues for March 6, 2013. The Council President will docket consideration of Port appointments after the Committees workshop. ###
