The Capillaries

Circulatory

Organs

Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels in the body.

Some capillaries are so small, they are just one cell thick. This makes them great for exchanging things between the blood and the bodys organs and tissues. Capillaries carry oxygen from the lungs to every part of the body that needs it. Then it picks up the carbon dioxide waste and sends it back toward the lungs to be exhaled out. Capillaries also pick up broken down food nutrients, called glucose, from the small intestines. They deliver this it to every part of the body that need it. Capillaries lay right up against organs and tissues for easy exchange of food and oxygen for wastes.
