GUEST SPEAKER FROM CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY We were delighted to welcome Roisin Ellison from Trinity Hall and Robinson College, Cambridge this week to talk to pupils about admissions and life at Oxbridge Universities. She informed pupils of Admission criteria, gave them great advice on the courses available and spoke about the range extra-curricular activities noting that they too are an important aspect of university life. She also tried to ease anxiety about the cost of University fees. She explained that the annual fees would be manageable and that the repayment of fees would not commence until the young people were earning over 21,000. She also noted that if the loan is not paid off in 30 years it is scrapped. Year 11 pupil Ellie Brain said that the talk offered Great advice that helped me to understand what university life is about and helped to eliminate worries about the fees. On the 24th January 2013 children's author Jon Mayhew gave two exciting talks to a E-mail: st_bedes_s@bristol-city.gov.uk range of age groups at St Bede's. He talked about three of his books: The Bonehill Curse, Mortlock and The Demon Collector. It was an inspiring talk that encouraged young people to write... even if they struggle in school! Afterwards, Jon Mayhew signed his novels for us and the college bought some books for our college library. It was really great! Niamh Kelly and Amara Fordham Vizcaino (7BBS). YEAR 7 ATHLETICS TEAM ARE CROWNED COUNTY CHAMPIONS! Well done to the Year 7 boys Sportshall Athletics team, who have been crowned County Champions! After coming through a tough cluster round, the team won the Bristol Finals by just 3 points and meant that they qualified for the county finals. The events included track sprint relays, 2 lap races, right through to a 8 lap paarlauf. Field events included shot putt, speed bounce, vertical jump, long and triple jump. The team performed extremely well on the day and beating 7 other schools in the final and over 50 schools overall. The team consisted of Moni'ee Wilson, Llewellyn Ntihemuka, Laurent Ngunjoh, Jacob Pazden, Kwame Hartley, Joe Eustace, Dom Robbins and Genetius Teboh.

NATIONAL CUP ADVENTURE CONTINUES FOR YEAR 9 FOOTBALL TEAM - DEVONPORT HIGH SCHOOL 3 ST BEDE'S 5 Well done to the Year 9 football team who travelled to Plymouth last week to play their Round 6 game. Despite going behind early on, goals from Leevan Uhylk and Iwan Hughes saw St Bede's lead 2 -1 at half time. In the second half further goals from Leevan Uhylk, George Curnock and Pierce Lydon took St Bede's to victory. A trip to John Hampden Grammar School at High Wycombe in Round 7 now awaits. Congratulations to all players for making it this far in the competition and reaching the last 16 from over 750 entrants. This now makes the Year 9 team the most successful ever at St Bede's!

ONE-DAY SCRATCH ORCHESTRA Congratulations to all pupils involved in Sundays One-day Scratch Orchestra at the 3772200 Fax: (0117) 3772201 Tel: (0117) Colston Hall. The concert raised an incredible 6,000 for Cancer Research and saw an orchestra of over 300 and chorus of 250 singers rehearse a challenging programme of music in the morning and perform to an audience of over 1000 the same day! The programme consisted of music by Mozart, Holst, Verdi and Gilbert and Sullivan, culminating in a Last Night of the Proms finale. The pupils participating had to be of a Grade 6 musical standard and were highly praised for their professionalism and musical abilities. They were a credit to themselves and the College. The event was a huge success, well done to all involved.

CATENIAN BURSARY GAP YEAR! Do you know a young person who is considering taking part in a VOLUNTEER PROJECT or perhaps someone whose development you feel would be enhanced by such an experience, given the right encouragement? The Catenians are offering financial assistance to young Catholics aged 16 to 24 who take part in a volunteer project. The project can be something they have arranged individually, or as part of a group. They do not any connection to the Catenians to benefit from the fund. READ TO SUCCEED AT ST BEDE'S! This term has seen the launch of St Bede's 'The BOOKET List' KS4/5 (a list of recommended books for the pupils to engage with as a personal challenge). Each term there is a draw to enable our readers (of all abilities) to receive a prize for their efforts. This term the lucky winners, of a pair of cinema tickets each are: Shannon Bohin and Mitchell Lockyer who are both from 10JLS. Good Luck to everyone next term! POETRY LIVE! th On Wednesday 6 February, 30 Year 11 pupils travelled to Bath for Poetry Live! The pupils found the experience extremely useful as they listened to poets such as Carol Ann Duffy, Grace Nicholls and John Agard and had the opportunity to analyse the poems in depth. Year 11 pupil Shelby Phillips-Hicks said the experience was enjoyable and will be very valuable in preparation for the forthcoming English GCSE

ST BEDES PRIMARY FOOTBALL LEAGUE On Tuesday 4th February the Community Sports Team hosted the third round of fixtures of the St Bede's Primary Football League. A great turn out again saw eleven primary schools bring their teams of Year 5 and 6 pupils down to contest another round of fixtures. The event was well supported by parents and teachers and the matches were evenly contested and played in a great spirit by all the teams. The schools taking part in the league are: Bank Leaze, Henleaze, St Bonaventures, Bishop Road, St Bernards, Brentry, Horfield, Westbury-on-Trym, St Teresas, Our Lady of the Rosary and Shirehampton. With six games remaining for all the schools Henleaze currently sit at the top of the league table.

BRISTOL CITY FC SCHOLARSHIP Congratulations to Year 11 pupil Matthew Mattis who has been offered a two year scholarship at Bristol City Football Club.

SPORTSHALL ATHLETICS Congratulations to the Year 9 Boys, Year 10 Boys and Year 10 Girls teams who all qualified for the Bristol final. The final will take place at Redland Green on 25th February. E-SAFETY We would like to make parents aware of a fantastic magazine all about parenting in the digital age. The magazine is available to view online and we have put a link to it on our school website (go to the home page and click on the blue e-safety button, you will find the link to the Digital Parenting Magazine near the top of the page). It includes a range of informative articles such as advice about online time limits, age ratings, setting boundaries and online security. It also contains guides to some of the favourite websites of teenagers. Plus it has instructions for setting up parental controls on the Internet, mobile phones and gaming consoles. This magazine is essential reading for every parent! Please do take a look!

GRADE 1-ATHON Well done to all staff and pupils participating in the Grade 1-athon! After three terms staff are beginning to reap the benefits of their new musical talents! ABRSM exams will be taking place in Term 5 for those who have reached the standard required for the Grade 1 exam. Pupil peris: You are now reaching an important time in your role as teacher. Remember. Scales, set pieces, aural tests and CONFIDENCE! GUITAR BAND Mr Diver one of our visiting guitar teachers, will be starting two guitar groups after half term. Rehearsals will take place on Tuesday and Friday lunchtimes and will be a fantastic opportunity for the colleges guitarists to perform within a large ensemble. A variety of funk/jazz/pop/rock music will be rehearsed and all guitarists, whether electronic or acoustic, beginner or experienced performers are welcome. FEBRUARY HALF-TERM SPORTS CAMPS The Community Sports Team will once again be running a week of sports activities during the February Half-Term. The camps will run from 9am3pm from Monday 11th - Friday 15th February. These camps are open to boys and girls aged 7-14 and the cost is 10 per day or 40 for the week.
