Maximum Usable Frequency Skip Distance and Skip Zone

Presented by: Fernando, Joanne Hazel S. BS ECE-4A

Maximum Usable Frequency (MUF) - the highest frequency that can be used for sky wave propagation between two specific points on Earths surface.
MUF = critical frequency cos i = critical frequency x sec i

The Secant Law - it assumes a flat Earth and a flat reflecting layer. Optimum Working Frequency - the frequency 85% of the MUF. Example: Determine the maximum usable frequency for a critical frequency of 10 MHz and an angle of incidence of 45o.
MUF = critical frequency x sec i = 10 MHz x sec 45o = 7.0711 Mhz

Skip Distance (ds) - the maximum distance from a transmit antenna that a sky wave at a given frequency will be returned to Earth. Skip Zone - the area between where the surface waves arc completely dissipates and the point where the first sky wave returns to Earth.
