Chapter 2) Book Problems: 1, 3, 7, 12, 15.

Exercise: Consider a small company planning to employ two types of workers: skilled and unskilled, in order to manufacture commodity products. The company pays $3 per hour for each unskilled worker and $5 per hour for each skilled worker. To minimize the amount of defective work caused mainly by the unskilled workforce, management has decided to limit the number of unskilled workforce to at most 25. Also, the management wants to limit the number of unskilled workers to be at most 10 more than that of skilled workers. The objective is to decide on the number of unskilled and skilled workers to hire to minimize the cost of fulfilling two orders received recently with different requirements for each order: Order A requires the production for at least 66 units, whereas order B requires a production of at least 54 units. The productivity (measured in the number of units produced) of skilled and unskilled workers differs according to the order type as follows:

Order A Order B

Units produced per unskilled worker 2 3

Units produced per skilled worker 3 2

Minimum production (in units) 66 54

1. Formulate a linear program that minimizes the cost of hiring per hour (assuming a fractional number is allowed). (8points) 2. Draw the feasible region and graphically find the optimal solution. (10 points) 3. Suppose that the minimum production of order A is decreased to 60 units. How do you expect the optimal solution to behave? Explain without finding the optimal solution. (2 points)
