1) (25 points) A bar of AISI 1030 hot-rolled steel has a yield strength, Sy = 37.5 kpsi. Using the distortion-energy and maximum-shear-stress theories determine the factors of safety for the following plane stress states: a. b. c. d. e. x = 25 kpsi, y = 15 kpsi. x = 15 kpsi, y = -15 kpsi. x = 20 kpsi, xy = -10 kpsi. x = -12 kpsi, y = 15 kpsi, xy = -9 kpsi. x = -24 kpsi, y = -24 kpsi, xy = -15 kpsi.

For part (e), please discuss your answers from an engineering design perspective.

2) (25 points) A brittle material has the properties Sut = 30 kpsi and Suc = 90 kpsi. Using the brittle Coulomb-Mohr and modified-Mohr theories, determine the factor of safety for the following states of plane stress: a. b. c. d. e. x = 25 kpsi, y = 15 kpsi. x = 15 kpsi, y = -15 kpsi. x = 20 kpsi, xy = -10 kpsi. x = -15 kpsi, y = 10 kpsi, xy = -15 kpsi. x = -20 kpsi, y = -20 kpsi, xy = -15 kpsi.

4) (25 points) A plate 100 mm wide, 200 mm long, and 12 mm thick is loaded in tension in the direction of the length. The plate contains a crack as shown in the below figure, with the crack length of 16 mm. The material is steel with KIC = 80 MPam0.5, and Sy = 950 MPa. Determine the maximum possible load that can be applied before the plate (a) yields, and (b) has uncontrolled crack growth.
