Theme: End of WWII in Pacific\Aftermath Grade: Grade 11 and United States History Goals: develop and test hypotheses

about important events, eras, or issues in New York State and United States history, setting clear and valid criteria for judging the importance and significance of these events, eras, or issues understand the interrelationships between world events and developments in New York State and the United States (e.g., causes for immigration, economic opportunities, human rights abuses, and tyranny versus freedom) analyze historical narratives about key events in New York State and United States history to identify the facts and evaluate the authors perspectives analyze the United States involvement in foreign affairs and a willingness to engage in international politics, examining the ideas and traditions leading to these foreign policies prepare essays and oral reports about the important social, political, economic, scientific, technological, and cultural developments, issues, and events from New York State and United States history Objectives: 1. Students will understand the dropping of the atomic bomb and the continuing controversy associated with it. 2. Students will conduct research about the soldiers who raised the American flag on the island of Iwo Jima, and then present it to the class 3. Students will comprehend the aftermath of WWII and the effects of the war globally and in America. 4. Students will debate the dropping of the atomic bomb and if President Truman made the correct decision. 5. Students will understand the policy of island hopping, and some smaller events during the end of WWII. Materials: 1. 2. 3. 4. Lesson: Warm-up: I will ask students to recall some of the similarities and differences between the three video clips we had watched last class? 1. I will start with the lecture notes on the smart board and continue lecturing until I finish discussing Iwo Jima and raising the flag. 2. 3. My cousin was one of the soldiers who helped raise the flag of Iwo Jima and the men who helped raise the flags have all interesting and significant stories. A. The students and I are going to take a trip to the library\computer lab and research the lives of these men B. I will assign each man to a group of 5 to 6 students C. The students may research anything they want about the soldiers and after researching will present the information they found to the class D. Many people do not know the backstory and lives of these men who played such a significant role in history that I feel like my students need to be aware of this. 4. Once the students finish their research they will present their information to the class. 5. After the students finish presenting their information I will continue with the lecture notes until I finish discussing the dropping of the atomic bomb 6. I will then hand students the Atomic bomb debate paper A. I will break the students in to two groups down the center and one side will be pro for dropping the atomic bomb and the other side would be against dropping the atomic bomb B. I will act as the facilitator of the debate and play devils advocate C. The students will use their class notes and the information they researched the night before for homework. 7. After students finish with the debate I will continue with the lecture notes and end the notes with the creation of NATO. 8. After finishing the lecture I will tell the students that their homework for the night is to begin studying for their test that will be coming up.
