Islamic Relief drums up awareness for GBV

JOHANNESBURG: Islamic Relief South Africa marked International Womens Day, by participating in the Drumming Campaign to stop violence against women and children. This initiative, that took place in the central business district in Johannesburg was jointly organised by Amnesty International South Africa, Drums for Peace and the City of Johannesburg. Hundreds of people participated in todays drumming session where the atmosphere remained sombre as onlookers were taken on an emotional journey, witnessing a dramatization of the various forms of abuse experienced by women and children. We will not remain silent until our message is received loud and clear. The only thing you should beat is a drum and not women, IRSA Programmes Manager Sherifa Mia said, as drums reverberated across the city centre. Gender based violence will not be tolerated. Launched in 2011, the Drumming Campaign rolls out their interactive drumming sessions at railway stations, taxi ranks and other public places, engaging people on relevant issues affecting society. Islamic Relief South Africa actively campaigns to raise awareness on issues of women and child abuse through our Positive Living programme. Regular community outreach workshops are held to educate men, women and children about Gender Based Violence. IRSA has participated in the Drumming campaign in 2012 during the 16 Days of Activism at different venues in Johannesburg. Mia explains: Violence against women and children in South Africa is a huge concern for Islamic Relief and its affiliates and we call on government to work with civil society to urgently address women and child abuse. We need to develop preventative measures and also offer the necessary psycho-social support to victims.
