InternationalWomensDay:NewZealandersstandinsolidaritywith
thewomenofSyria
TodaymarksInternationalWomensDay,andacrossthecountryweareaskingNew
ZealanderstotakeastandwiththewomenofSyria.
TheSyrianconflicthastakenabrutaltollonwomenandgirls,bothwithinandoutsidethe
country.Womenarebearingthebruntofthepointlessbloodshedwhichhasbeengoingonfor
nearlyfiveyears,saidMegdeRonde,CampaignsDirectoratAmnestyInternationalinNew
Zealand.
We,theundersignedorganisations,notewithgreatconcernthattheSyriangovernmentand
severalarmedgroupsarecommittinghorrificabusesagainstwomenandgirlsinaclimateof
totalimpunity.WithinSyria,womenfacerapeandsexualassault,arbitrarydetention,torture,
enforceddisappearance,thedenialoflifesavingaidandthedestructionoftheirhomes,
hospitalsandschools.Thosewhohavefledthecountry,forexampletoneighbouringLebanon,
experiencediscrimination,exploitationandsexualharassmentintheireverydaylives.
WhilethewomenofSyriafaceintensepressure,wewishtohighlightthattheypersistas
politicalactivists,aidworkers,teachersandcaregivers.Womenledorganisationsareactiveon
thegroundacrossthecountryandinrefugeecamps,undertakingcrucialworkforcivilians
affectedbytheconflict.Despiteextraordinarylossandconstantabuse,theystaystrongand
resilient.
ThisInternationalWomensDay,itistimetodemandsafetyanddignityforthewomenofSyria,
andurgeourgovernmenttoupitsgameinsupportofthem,saidMegdeRonde.
NewZealandhasrecentlyadoptedaNationalActionPlan
on
Women,PeaceandSecurity.
Thisplanisacrucialtooltoadvancewomensrightsrelativetoissuesofinternationalpeace
andsecurity.ItshouldserveasanimpetustoredoubleoursupportforthewomenofSyria.
Firstly,wecallontheNewZealandgovernmenttoincreaseresettlementandotherpathwaysof
admissionforSyrianwomenandgirlsatriskofviolence,abuseandexploitation.
Secondly,weurgeNewZealandtoboostitsfinancialassistancetooverwhelmedrefugeehost
countries,includingLebanon.Partsoftheadditionalfundingmustbespecificallytargeted
towardstheprotectionofwomenandgirlsatrisk,andaimtomeettheirimmediatemedical,
psychosocial,andeconomicneeds.
Thirdly,NewZealandmustuseitsroleontheUNSecurityCounciltopressforwomensactive
participationindeterminingSyriasfuture.UNledpeacenegotiationsbetweentheSyrian
governmentandoppositionleadersareexpectedtoresumeon9March,yetwomens
meaningfulparticipationisnotguaranteed.
Womenarecrucialactorsforchange,andempiricalevidenceshowsthatpeaceismorelikely
toprevailandholdifwomenarefullyinvolvedinbuildingit,saidMegdeRonde.
CurrentlyitlooksasifonlythemenwithgunswillberepresentedatSyriasnextroundof
peacetalks.Itistimethatwomensvoicesareheard,andweneedcountrieslikeNewZealand
toexertpressuretoensuretheirmeaningfulparticipationinpeacenegotiations.
