Due: 18/2/13

1. An isotropic elastic solid (E2 , 2 ) containing a spherical inhomogeneity (E1 , 1 ) of radius a is subjected to far-eld load 12 = 21 = . (a) Calculate all stress and strain components in the solid if the inhomogeneity has same elastic properties as the surrounding material. (b) Use Eshelbys equivalent inclusion method to calculate all stress components inside the inhomogeneity and at locations (a, 0, 0), (0, a, 0) and (0, 0, a) along the interface between inhomogeneity and the surrounding matrix. Centre of sphere is the origin of co-ordinate system. (c) Specialize the above results if the inhomogeneity is a hole. What is the stress concentration factor? (d) Specialize the results of 1(b) if the inhomogeneity is a rigid material. 2. Two spherical inclusions (1,2) in an innite elastic isotropic solid (E, ) with radius a1 and a2 are subjected to eigenstrains ij and ij respectively. 1 2 (a) Calculate self energy of each inclusion (b) Calculate interaction energy of the two inclusion. [Use solution of 2(c) from Hw2]. 3. An isotropic elastic solid (E2 , 2 ) containing a spherical inhomogeneity (E1 , 1 ) of radius a is subjected to far-eld load ij = ij . Use problem 2 of Hw2 to determine stresses in the matrix and inside the inhomogeneity. Your results for stresses inside the inhomogeneity should match with the ones obtained in the class using Eshelbys equivalent inclusion method.
