2013 USBC Open Championships Underway in Reno

By Matt Cannizzaro - USBC RENO, Nev. - The 2013 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships kicked off its 125-day run last week as the first of more than 10,000 teams hit the lanes at the National Bowling Stadium. The tournament is making its record 11th visit to The Biggest Little City in the World and eighth trip to the one-of-a-kind NBS, where more than 400 bowlers and fans helped usher in the 110th edition of the storied event. The opening-night festivities included a ceremonial ribbon cutting, traditional Mass Ball Shot, exhibition by the cast of "Magique," a show being held at the Eldorado Hotel Casino and the crowning of Joe Bowler. Michael Mariani of Havre, Mont., earned the distinction of being named this year's USBC photo Joe Bowler, a tradition started in 1951. Georgias Sterner Rolls 299 to Win First Title in PBA Don Carter Classic
By Bill Vint - PBA ALLEN PARK, Mich. Jason Sterner of McDonough, Ga., who had never finished higher than seventh place in a Professional Bowlers Association Tour event before the 2012-13 season, won his first PBA Tour title in the Don Carter Classic with a nearly-perfect 299-235 victory over top qualifier Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, at Thunderbowl Lanes. The Don Carter Classic and PBA League Carter team finals aired on ESPN. Sterner, who lost a 199-177 decision to eventual champion Tom Daugherty in his only previous PBA television appearance in the Bowlers Journal Scorpion Championship during the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling earlier in the season, lost his chance at the 23rd nationally-televised 300 game in PBA history when he left a solid 10 pin on his final shot. He also lost a bid to join Bob Benoit of Topeka, Kan., as only the second player to win his first PBA Tour title with a 300 game. Benoit won the 1988 Quaker State Open in Grand Prairie, Texas, for his first title in his first PBA television appearance. The biggest thing I learned from my first show was getting rid of the nerves, and to trust your decisions, Sterner said. Its a little added pressure to bowl on TV, but once you get comfortable, and trust your decisions, its a lot easier. I felt very confident, he added. I had the right ball, I knew what moves I needed to make and it was just a matter of going through my routine and believing in it. After the first couple of shots, I could see how the PBA photo lanes were changing, and it just Jason Sterner won his first PBA came easy. It was definitely a title with Don Carter Classic. great feeling. When I realized the match was done, I realized I had a shot at 300, and the pins just kept falling, Sterner continued. I dont think Ive ever bowled that good of a game under pressure, ever. The last shot, I liked. I thought it was a great shot, but at that point I was so ready to celebrate the win, the 300 game wasnt even important. With his first title, Sterner also earned his first opportunity to compete in the Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions, March 26-31 at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis.

Jake Rollins, Colette Malyack Top Youth Travelers

By Vince Albrecht OAKLAND, NJ - In Stan Niemiec Youth Travel League action, Glen Rock junior Jake Rollins continued his merciless assault on the plasticcoats, blowing them away with 238-278-226 for a 742 as he powered his Fair Lawn quartet to a season-best 1076 handicap score and a 5-2 triumph over pace-setting Bowler City I. In the 1076 game, the players combined for a 901 scratch, just one stick shy of the league high. Steve Plaszky hit 225, Katrina Plaszky 175, 11-year-old Hunter Perry 223 and Jake 278. Despite being shell-shocked, BC I came back to salvage the finale, 945-940 behind Eric Grabusnik 213 and Ryan Perez 211; anchor Vinny Santoro led the BC I offense with 202-226: 615. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Holiday II could only field two players against Boonton, but they were the Malyack siblings and both were sizzling, hot enough to engineer a threepoint turnaround after barely dropping the first two games. Colette lifted her average to an impressive 208 by firing steady games of 223-243-235-701 and DePaul sophomore Joseph exploded in game three with 265 to finish with 669 after opening with 223 and 181. Boonton seemed out-of-sorts in the match, managing just three deuces, Pat Teshima 222 and Karl Kattermann 213-201. Although 13-year-old Jon Mikal Sepero blitzed the maples with 234188-254-676, with strong singles from Kyle Schellberg 191 and Kristen Kane 178, his Bowler City II squad was swept by Bowler City IV which, averaging 612 prior to the contest, produced games of 673717-665. Highs for the victors were Greg Khan 222, Nick Ferrante 206, Caitlin Tombo 183 and Nathan Tombo 182.

points earned in five preliminary rounds, will compete for the first PBA League championship on Sunday, March 31, at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis as part of Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions week. The Elias Cup Finals will air on ESPN on April 7 at 1 p.m. ET. I think Im liking my team a lot, KingPins franchise player Pete Weber beamed after making a surprise lineup change that worked to his teams advantage. He moved Norton, a left-hander who had been a dominant player in previous PBA League rounds, to the No. 4 position in the lineup and he placed Team USA member and former Wichita State collegiate star John Szczerbinski in the anchor position. I know Scott was bowling well (in the anchor position), but Szczerbinski averaged 257 on the Don Carter lane condition in qualifying, so I talked it over with the team and they all agreed to make the change and have John bowl anchor, Weber said. It isnt me; this is our whole team agreeing to what were doing. After every shot we communicate and try to help each other. I have all the confidence in the world in all of my players. We got a few breaks, but without breaks you dont win. Tomorrow we might not get them, but today we did and we took advantage of them. In the semifinal match between the KingPins, who won the Salvino round earlier in the PBA League series, and the Roth round-winning Motown Muscle, neither team put together consecutive strikes until the KingPins started a string of seven strikes in the sixth frame to run away with a 249-192 win.
