Tute sheet # 2 (Conventional dc and ac Traction) Q. 1 A suburban train consists of motor and trailer coaches in the ratio of 1:1. If the combined mass (M) of one motor and trailer is 40 tonnes when fully loaded, wheel radius (R) is 0.54 meter, combined inertia of all wheels (J1) is 1049.76 kg-m2, inertia of all motors referred to wheels (J2) is 375 kg-m2, then determine the total tractive force to accelerate the train at 5 km/h/s. Assume the train resistance (r) to be 20 N/tonne of the train mass. Q. 2 A 100 tonne motor coach is driven by 4 motors, each developing a torque of 5000 N-m during acceleration. If up-gradient is 50 in 1000, gear ratio a= 25, gear transmission efficiency 98%, wheel radius 0.54 meter, train resistance 25 N/tonne, effective mass on account of rotational inertia is 10% higher, calculate the time taken to attain a speed of 100 km/h. Q. 3 An electric train weighing 500 tonne climbs up-gradient with G = 8 and the following speed-time curve: (i) Uniform acceleration of 2.5 km/hr/sec for 60 sec (ii) Constant speed for 5 min (iii) Coasting for 3 min (iv) Dynamic braking at 3 km/hr/sec to rest The train resistance is 25 N/tonne, rotational inertia effect 10% and combined efficiency of transmission and motor is 80%. Calculate the specific energy consumption. Q. 4 If the above drive is now moving down gradient with G = 20 with the following speedtime curve: (i) Uniform acceleration of 3 km/hr/sec with 50 sec (ii) Constant speed operation for 10 min (iii) Uniform braking at 2.5 km/hr/sec to rest Assume efficiency of transmission and motor during braking to be same as during motoring (80%). Calculate the energy consumption for starting, uniform speed interval and braking.
