Also known as discrimination The ability to discern different, yet closely spaced analytical

signals.

The spectrometer on the SPEC 20 can discriminate wavelengths of

light that are about 20 nm apart (even if you can set wavelengths only 5 nm different)

The spectrometer on our Varian ICP can discriminate wavelengths

of light that are 0.005 nm apart!

Better selectivity means you can be sure which signal is which

when you have more than one analyte in the sample!

However, if all other conditions are equal, increasing selectivity will

Bandwidth is closely related to selectivity in optical spectrometers. It is a measure of what range of light we allow to strike the detector at any given time.

EVERYTHING YOU DO IN THIS CLASS WILL BE A BATTLE! THE BATTLE BETWEEN SIGNAL AND SELECTIVITY! There is no way to maximize both. You have to choose some happy medium, where you get enough signal to detect the analyte, but can also be selective enough so that you are sure of what you are detecting.

 Selectivity:

Selectivity of an analytical method refers to the degree to which the method is free from interference by other species contained in the sample matrix. No analytical method is totally free from interference from other species, and steps need to be taken to minimize the effects of these interferences. Selectivity coefficient gives the relative response of the method to interfering species as compared with analyte. Selectivity coefficient can range from zero (no interference) to values greater than unity. A coefficient is negative when the interference caused a reduction in the intensity of the output signal of the analyte.

 Selektivitas adalah Tingkatan dimana suatu metode analisis

bebas dari interferensi dari matriks yang terkandung dalam sampel. Dalam Selektivitas suatu alat hanya akan mengukur suatu zat tertentu (analat) saja secara cermat dan seksama dengan adanya komponen lain yang mungkin ada dalam sampel. Selektivitas dalam analisis instrumen sangatlah penting karena dalam analisis intrumen dihadapkan dengan matriks yang sangat kompleks. sehingga detektor instrumen dapat selektif dan hanya memberikan tanggapan terhadap sinyal molekul spesifik atau dengan kata lain . Dalam selektivitas detektor yang sangat menentukan adalah instrumen analisis yang dibuat dengan dasar pengukuran sifat fisiko-kimia yang khusus dari molekul molekul yang dianalisis. Penentuan sifat fisikokimia tersebut terkadang terganggu oleh zat lainnya (matriks) sehingga diperlukan cara tersendiri untuk menghilangkan sinyal dari komponen pengganggu tersebut.Selektivitas seringkali dapat dinyatakan sebagai derajat penyimpangan (degree of bias) metode yang 3/16/13 bahan yang dilakukan terhadap sampel yang mengandung ditambahkan berupa cemaran, hasil urai, senyawa

Suatu metode dikatakan spesifik apabila

metode tersebut hanya memberikan respon untuk suatu analit dan suatu metode dikatakan selektif apabila metode tersebut memberikan respon untuk beberapa senyawa kimia yang dapat dengan jelas dibedakan satu sama lain. Selektivitas juga menunjukkan kemampuan untuk memisahkan analit dari hasil degradasi dan metabolit. Metode yang memberikan respon hanya terhadap suatu analit sangat terbatas 3/16/13 sehingga istilah selektivitas lebih banyak digunakan.
