INDUSTRIAL RANGE FOR AGRICULTURAL APPLICATIONS. THE LAND OF INNOVATION. TIER 4 FINAL/STAGE IV.

Clean Power.
During the combustion process inside an engine, the chemical energy is transformed into a mechanical one. Due to the impurity of fossil fuel during the combustion process, several toxic substances are produced. They are primarily NOx, CO, HC, PM.

NOx: Nitrogen Oxides are the main cause of acid rain and ozone layer reduction. At high combustion
temperatures, usually above 1600C, molecular nitrogen (N2) and oxygen (O2) disassociate into their atomic states and react producing NOx.

CO: Carbon Monoxide is a poisonous gas, tasteless and odourless. It develops during combustion in
presence of low oxygen concentration (rich blends) or when the oxygen is not uniformly distributed. CO emission for Diesel engines are low.

HC: Hydrocarbons are composed by organic elements - contained both in the fuel and in the oil and produced by incomplete combustion. The HC amount increases together with the fuel volume in the combustion chamber.

PM: Particulate Matter is mainly composed by minute carbon particles and other toxic substances
created during incomplete fuel burning process i.e. low combustion temperature. The effects of inhaling particulate matter have been widely studied in humans and animals and include asthma, lung cancer and cardiovascular issues.

Being the most critical pollutants, NOx and PM have been both reduced by approximately 60% since 1996. The next big challenge will come in January 2014, when a new limit established by Tier4Final/Stage IV emission regulations will call for a further drastic reduction of Nitrogen Oxides at more than 80% vs. Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB legislation.

Caring about the environment.

Both in the US and Europe many efforts have been carried out to make Diesel engines as clean as possible. Engines must be environmentally friendly during their entire life period and under a wide range of operating conditions. Starting from 2014, Tier 4 Final/Stage IV regulations will rstly concern engines with power above 130kW to be then extended to other power ranges. Tier 4 Final/Stage IV compliance implies a signicant reduction of NOx (-80%) over todays Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB levels, while PM is not affected by further reduction, having already reached a 90% abatement in the previous step.

The Tier 4 Finals request: massive reduction of NOx.

Due to the opposite reaction to combustion temperature, the reduction of either of the combustion products (NOx or PM) necessarily implies the increase of the other one. In order to further reduce NOx, as required by Tier 4 Final/Stage IV, it is necessary to work on different combustion management and exhaust gas treatment systems. SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) Only technology is an after-treatment system that transforms the NOx produced during the higher temperature combustion process into Nitrogen (N2) and Water (H2O), both of which are naturally occurring chemicals in the atmosphere. Thus the use of SCR Only technology allows NOx reduction, occurring downstream the engine, and optimizes at the same time combustion process and engine performance.

FPT Industrials answer: SCR Only technology.

SCR ONL Y TECHNOLOGY

Starting from the Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB, SCR Only technology allows exhaust emissions to comply with Tier 4 Final/Stage IV emission level in two simple steps.

Th high temperature The combustion c engine calibration ca produces NOx and a very limited lim amount of PM.

SCR Only: how it works.

The SCR after-treatment system adopts a catalyst converting NOx into Nitrogen (N2 ) and Water (H2 O) thanks to the chemical reaction with a Water-Urea solution (DEF: Diesel Emission Fluid/AdBlue). The Water-Urea solution is a non toxic, colourless and odourless mixture of chemical urea and demineralised water. The whole system is controlled and managed by the Engine Control Unit (ECU), according to different power, torque and emission levels. The main components of the SCR system are: Supply Module Dosing Module SCR Catalyst with integrated CUC DOC DEF/AdBlue Tank The ECU (Engine Control Unit), the brain behind the SCR system, checks, through sensors integrated in the exhaust, the amount of Water-Urea solution to be injected in the exhaust pipe, producing steam, ammonia (NH 3) and nitrogen oxide (NO). To minimize the use of DEF/AdBlue, the injector is cooled by the engine coolant. Next, the remaining substances enter the DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst), where NO is converted in NO2, to reach a 50:50 ratio between NO2 and NOx, to maximize the SCR performance also at low temperature. In the SCR catalyst NOx is converted in N2 and H2O while the integrated CUC (Clean Up Catalyst) eliminates the remaining ammonia (NH3). The result is a reduction of NOx superior to 95%.

10 reasons for choosing SCR Only.

1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7)
Lower Fuel consumption: the efciency of the combustion process optimizes fuel consumption reducing customer running costs. Outstanding Performance: being SCR an after-treatement system, the engine is designed to maximize torque and power with the shortest load response time. Longer Service interval: the optimized combustion process preserves oil physical properties reducing maintenance activities and related downtime. High Reliability: SCR system allows the engine to reduce heat rejection of many internal engine components which leads to better reliability. Unbeatable Durability: SCR system is engineered for life. The reduction of PM inside the engine grants total absence of clogging problems and excludes any regeneration intervention. Compact packaging: compared to competitors engine, the thermodynamic efciency of SCR system allows to downsize displacement enhancing performance. Wide Fuel Compatibility: SCR system works regardless fuel quality. In the FPT Industrial SCR Only technology the catalyst substrates are not inuenced by the presence of traditional poisoning substances in the fuel such as sulphur. User friendly solution: SCR system is simple. The only thing to do is relling urea when the level indicator in the vehicle instrument cluster ashes. Environmental care: thanks to SCR system pollutants produced during the combustion process are converted into harmless N2 and H20, already present in the environment. of the future to be compliant with Tier 4/Stage IV. .

10) Advanced technology: SCR Only is recognized by most of the engine manufacturers as the technology

SCR ONL Y BENEFITS

FPT Industrial: Tier 4 Final/Stage IV engine line up. NEF Series.

NEF Series includes a 4 cyl and a 6 cyl, respectively 4,5lt and 6,7lt, covering a power range from 80 to 230 kW. FPT Industrials choice enabled to increase engine power ratings during the transition between Tier 4 interim and Tier 4 Final, without resorting to any particularly complicated air feeding system. As well as for Tier 4 interim, Common Rail injection system is conrmed. Totally new is the Engine Control Unit which, on Tier 4 Final versions, is in charge of SCR system management. Noteworthy is the compactness of propulsion units, while considering the overall engine and cooling package; the latter, infact, thanks to the choice of not using EGR, does not need to be increased to assure a wider thermal dispersion. NEF Series is still available in Tier 3/Stage IIIA and Tier 4 interim/Stage IIIB versions.

CURSOR Series.
CURSOR Series, besides 8.7lt and 12.9lt displacement, will be enriched with a 11.1lt version. The Common Rail injection system will be extended to the whole range; in particular, the 11.1lt and 12.9lt versions will be equipped with a HD (Heavy Duty) Common Rail able to ensure injection pressures up to 2200 bar. The 12.9lt version will also be proposed with a Dual Stage Turbocharger able to reach up to 500 kW. As well as NEF Series, CURSOR Series will adopt a new Engine Control Unit in charge of SCR system management. CURSOR Series will cover a power range from 220 kW to 500 kW. CURSOR Series is still available in Tier 3/Stage IIIA and Tier 4 interim/Stage IIIB versions.
