Group: Cognitive Development and Language Choosing developmentally appropriate learning activities In your group, examine the game,

assigned software and curriculum expectations and consider the developmental level appropriate for each. Discuss the questions for each learning activity and record the key points in a Word document to share with your colleagues in a group discussion. BOARD GAME: What ages is the game recommended for? Do you agree with the recommendation? Why? What aspects of cognitive and language development must be considered when making the recommendation, i.e., what does the game require you to be able to do in terms of thinking and planning? How could you adjust the game (e.g., by changing the rules, adding scaffolds, etc.) to make it appropriate for younger or older children? SOFTWARE: What ages would you recommended use the software? Why? What aspects of cognitive and language development must be considered when making the recommendation, i.e., what does the software require you to be able to do in terms of thinking and planning? Does the software support a variety of stages of cognitive development? Are there scaffolds in place to help students with their thinking?

CURRICULUM EXPECTATIONS: Examine the curriculum expectations for grade one, grade 4 and grade 8. Talk about what language skills children must have, what they must be able to do, or ways in which they must be able to think, to meet those expectations. Describe some learning tasks that would be developmentally appropriate for each level and explain why.
