Jaclynn Reed Mr. Neuberger English 120 March 18, 2013 Edith Coliver Holocaust Survivor Essay Edith Coliver, a Holocaust survivor, was born July 26, 1922 Karlsruhe, Germany. Edith now resides in San Francisco, California and interviewed by Joseph Belanoff on August26, 1999. Growing up Colivers family had resided in Germany for over 300 years prior. Edith was raised upper middle class of a German and Jewish family, and the daughter of a banker. It wasnt until 1933, age 11, Edith and her two younger brothers were not allowed attendance at a public school. War was at their door steps, therefore Ediths father sent her to England for a year in 1937. However, prior to this happening Colivers first episode with Nazis was also in 1933, the Nazis liked to play tricks on her people. Coliver states, SS man would say to the woman at the house, is this where the widow of so and so lives? This is how the Nazis would inform women of deceased husbands. The years 1934-1937 were the hardest for her family; however her father stated, He would not be oceans apart from her when the war was raging, so therefore the Coliver family voyaged to America June of 1938. Arriving in America, her father had family in New York; Coliver was the first of her family to see the Statue of Liberty. There was a parade going on and the people were chanting, Down with Hitler! this was very comforting to Edith. However, Edith never went into concentration camps, or lost family brutally, she was able to survive by her family and escaping to America. Freedom gave them hope. At the end of the day family was the only thing that mattered besides survival alone. Word Count: 291
