Neuburger ENG 102-117 March 25, 2013 The Ghetto Response Essay The film The Ghetto was an eye opening experience for me, the pure reality of Nazis brutally persecuting the Jewish people during the World War I. However seeing real film footage of innocent people treated as if they were worthless and had no souls, was a completely devastating experience for me. To watch human beings treat other human beings in a way that is absolutely unacceptable and to throw lives away for the sake of an order was heart wrenching. Sadly the Jewish people were oblivious to their fate; they had no control and no idea that the worst was yet to come for their people in the ghettos. Starvation and malnutrition mostly killed these people in the film it was sickening to watch. The Jewish people died at the hands of Nazis. Their were piles of bodies, the mass graves, men, women, and children lay dead on sidewalks while life continued on in these camps and areas called ghettos. If the starvation did not kill these people the lack of willingness and loss of hope did. How could they know that life would and could get worse? Seeing the corpses scattered on sidewalks, while film makers made the Jews walk past with heads held high like it was an everyday episode are the images I cannot forget. You could see the pain in their eyes as they tried to act normal in fear of their lives walking past the film crews and Nazi soldiers. The Jews being portrayed in the propaganda film as heartless barbarians by the Nazi film crews, however they were everything but. Another scene that sticks out unforgettably was the use of the best Hurst to carry the dead to the gravesite; however the

Jews did not bury their dead. The mass graves were overwhelmed with bodies, and the shack in the film was so full of dead and they could not keep up with burying in a timely manor. It was so sad to know that war drives people to do such cruel, inhumane, unforgiveable actions that will never be forgotten. Word Count: 361
