Baran grew up daughter of a printer, lower-middle class, too, Baran and her brother attended a private Jewish High School. Growing up Baran had a very happy childhood, lived in a great Jewish neighborhood and liked to walk to the nearby shops. Barans neighborhood later became a large ghetto, and went on to hold 42,000 Jews and only 2,000 were left alive in the camp. Malka was in the sixth grade, only twelve when the Germans occupied the city and shut down Jewish schools. This vivid day in 1943 was so early and so dark, Baran stated,I knew something was wrong, we were layering our clothing; I walked up to our window and saw the SS men and no people. They were shouting OUT! OUT! All at once! Other families had been kicked out of homes; they were all in the middle of the street, lined up in rows of five as they began to march. The selections were next, Germans stood on both sides with guns, screaming, shouting, and then Baran and her father, and brother were separated from their mother. Barans father tried running towards his wife but was hit in the back of the head with the butt of a German gun. Baran was taken to a metal factory, while her father and brother separated and then later found out were shot in the back while working on the Rail Road. Baran has severe memory loss from this time period until spring of 1943 when she was taken to a concentration camp. She worked in a factory for the Germans and sorted artillery shells. Baran remained in this camp until the liberation. Word Count: 301
