Catherine Megan J. Buscato Larry Neuberger ENG 102-118 21 February 2013 Response Essay Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

-Harrison Bergeron Kurt Vonnegut Jr.s Harrison Bergeron, talks about what Americans experience in the year 2081 where the government implements equality among all citizens. After reading Vonneguts story, one can conclude that the governments ways of ruling its citizens can be viewed as unethical and immoral. The story shows the governments persistence to control and impose equality to the people by instilling pain into their minds for them to submit and follow the governments laws. As Vonnegut points out, He began to think glimmeringly about his abnormal son who was in jail, about Harrison, but a twenty-gun salute in his head stopped that (295). Not only does the government instill pain to the people but fear as well. The story shows how boldly the government insinuates fear to the people. Vonnegut illustrates, She fired twice and the Emperor and the Empress were dead before they hit the floor (298). In addition, the government also deprives the people to use their intelligence for them to advance in every aspect of life. Vonnegut shows, the transmitter would send out some sharp noise to keep people like George from taking unfair advantage of their brains (294). One can indeed say after reading the story that the governments ways of control can be considered unethical and immoral. Words: 211 Work Cited Vonnegut Jr., Kurt. "Harrison Bergeron."
