MONTAGE
Description: An inspirational montage mad emy belding two or more images together and using typography. Date: 13 Feb. 2013 Course/ instructor: Comm 130 Visual Media, section 2, Caryn Esplin Programs/ Tools: Adobe Photoshop Objectives: Learn to manage Photoshop layers Learn to blend images smoothly by using masks Use filters Apply appropriate typography Process: The first thing I did was change my image size to 8.511 I added a filter to my background image. I used the crystalize filter under pixelate. Then I brought in the second image and added a mask to it. I kept the rule of thirds in mind while arranging my images. The hard edges of the second image were removed using the brush tool with black paint at 100% Then I gradually blended the rest of the picture using 30% opacity and flow and a soft brush I added two contrasting fonts, a modern and a sans serif, for the quote from a singer. Each font has a different color, so, to make it legible I placed the text over a section of the picture where both colors would contrast well. The critique I had received on my draft influenced the outcome of the final project.

LOGOS
Description: Three logo variations for the same company. Date: 22 Feb. 2013 Course/ instructor: Comm 130 Visual Media, section 2, Caryn Esplin Programs/ Tools: Adobe Illustrator Objectives: Create a variety of logos to fit a company of personal image. Use the basic tools of Illustrator Process: I enjoy snowboarding so I used that as the reason behind this project and the first thing I did was look through hundreds of snowboarding logos for inspiration. After, I sketched out two pages of ideas and then selected the ones I thought stood out more to narrow down the selection. Then, I went on Illustrator. I created the upward arrow symbols on the first logo by using the polygon tool and then adjusting the shape with the direct selection tool. I added a line to separate the text and arrows, but it also unifies the whole thing. On the second logo, with the polygon tool again, the Z was created. I then used the star tool; with 3 points made the triangle and adjusted it to fit inside the Z shape. On the third logo, I used the star tool to make 4 triangles, and used the direct selection tool to modify the black triangle. On the decorative text I created outlines on each letter, and ungrouped the letters too. I wanted to have the text split and offset a little, so I used the knife tool to do that. The rest on all 3 is mainly typography and i used teal as part of the color scheme on all 3.

LETTERHEAD
Description: Matching letterhead and business card designed using a personal created logo. Date: 2 Mar. 2013 Course/ instructor: Comm 130 Visual Media, section 2, Caryn Esplin Programs/ Tools: Adobe Illustrator and Indesign Objectives: Create a new logo to fir a company of personal image Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead Use the basic tools of Illustrator and Indesign Process: Its a snowboarding company and having the z etched into the triangle mountain symbolizes the name. The top of the z cuts off the top of the triangle, making a smaller triangle, the zenith. Process: The first thing I did was make a latter z using the Illustrator shape tool and using the same tool brought in shapes around the z to create the the triangle. The shapes were modified using the direct selection tool. The fonts were selected so they would contrast, and as well as the colors. I also created a stretched out z, in Illustrator for the bottom of the letter head. This was to have repetition throughout the letterhead and card. I also created a QR code using http://www.the-qrcode-generator.com/ and linked it to my comm blog. The critique was also helpful because it helped me fix some alignment.

BUSINESS CARD

BROCHURE
Description: A two sided (duplex) folding brochure Date: 16 Mar. 2013 Course/ instructor: Comm 130 Visual Media, section 2, Caryn Esplin Programs/ Tools: Adobe Illustrator, Indesign and Illustrator Objectives: Use all three of the Adobe programs to make a brochure. Incorporate Text wrap, paragraph styles Design a fitting logo for the company represented Process: I decided to go with a half fold because that is the style that most apparel catalogs have since it is simple and professional. I prepared early for this project by having a photo shoot with my friends the weekend before the project started. I wanted my final prints to be 1117 (8.511 when folded), but i worked on a 1218 canvas so it would fit inside and I could easily cut it out after printing. I made a new logo for this brochure and I created it in Illustrator. The name if the Company is Vera & Fierro, so I centered the V and added 2 Fs, one on each side, making it symmetrical. When I was ready to bring everything the first thing I added on my InDesign document were the photos I had taken. Then I added text boxes that describe the people in the photos and who they are. For the mission statement I added a box, brought down the opacity and then added the text over it. For the text I did paragraph styling. I also added touches of color through colored boxes throughout the document to make it more colorful. I also added text over these colored boxes. Doing this created repetition. I did the text wrap on the last page. I worked, following the tutorial, in Photoshop and then brought the image into indesign and modified the text around it.

FLIER
Description: Black and white promotioanl flyer for the Graduate Leadership Conference Date: 12 Jan. 2013 Course/ instructor: Comm 130 Visual Media, section 2, Caryn Esplin Programs/ Tools: Adobe Indesign Objectives: Apply design principles and appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve the flier layout. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact. Process: The first thing I did for this project was think about and sketch a few ideas on paper. I picked the one that stood out the most, and made made a few changes as I designed it on InDesign. I also used the critique given by fellow classmates to make my design more appealing. The fonts used compliment each other. I applied repetition by repeating rectangle shaped text boxes, and variation by changing the color in each. I used the highest contrast on the title, using black and white, to attract attention. The vertical bar is used to connect the images together and help direct the view downward. The image, logo and content were given to me.

EVENT AD
Description: A color full-bleed event ad promoting a fundraiser, using only Microsoft Word and a scanner. Date: 2 Feb. 2013 Course/ instructor: Comm 130 Visual Media, section 2, Caryn Esplin Programs/ Tools: Microsoft Word Objectives: Find, scan and import a high quality image Create full-bleed design Use text boxes for layout in Word Insert and edit images in Word Process: I scanned a picture from Vogue of a Tommy Hilfiger ad. Since it was an ad for clothing I decided to go with the idea of a clothing sale for charity. I made the scanned image more transparent so that I could add the boxes (Which were also transparent) so that the words would be able to stand out. The boxes create repetition because they are identical in size, but the transparency is different. I chose a decorative font because it is catchy, but then with the old style font it makes it look classier and its easier to read. I really liked how I could use Word to make something like this. Some friends of mine didnt believe Word has some of the features I used.

WEB PAGE
Description: A webpage to show a personally created logo. Date: 16 Mar. 2013 Course/ instructor: Comm 130 Visual Media, section 2, Caryn Esplin Programs/ Tools: Text Edit and Adobe Photoshop Objectives: Size and optimize an original logo as a png. for a webpage. Write content to descriibe the processof creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Design a webpage using HTML to display a logo and content . Acquire a basic knowledge of HMTL and basic understanding of CSS. Identify hex colors for web design. Compress multiple files in a zip folder into one file. Process: I started by by creating a webpage using Text Edit. After I was done putting in all my information I used http://www.W3.org to see if my work would validate. It took me several tries to to get it to work. I had indent errors and was mission some characters. After fixing all that it validated! Validating was challenging, but very helpful. After this was done I linked my HTML and CSS together. In the CSS I made sure I put in the right information so that the colors and colors from my logo would be incorporated throughout the page. I used orange, grey, and white. I also added a black border. The fonts I used were Trajan and Impact. The fonts had substitutes in the CSS so the information still shows up even if someone didnt have the specific fonts I used. I had to change the padding all around because my texts were not aligned and my logo wasnt either. After playing around with different numbers that change the padding the problem was solved and it is well aligned. After I was done I took a screen shot of the web page and adjusted it for the blog using photoshop.

IMAGING
Description: A personally taken photograph that has been edited/formatted using Photoshop Date: 16 Feb. 2013 Course/ instructor: Comm 130 Visual Media, section 2, Caryn Esplin Programs/ Tools: Adobe Photoshop Canon T3i Objectives: Learn basic photography skills Use digital camera to take a quality image and then upload it Size and crop the image Adjust brightness, contrast and hue and saturation levels Use the selection tool to isolate a portion of the image Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image Process: My friend Melanie and I went down by the cheap theater and thats where I did the photos. After cropping several of the photos I took I chose the this one because it portrayed the rule of thirds well. I used the direct selection tool to outline Melanie and then I inverted the selection and desaturated the background almost completely. I still wanted a tiny bit of color in it. Then I opened the filters and used the watercolor one. I transferred the finished piece unto a ne document and made sure it was set according to measurements.
