{business card}
Description: Date:
3.2.13 Matching letterhead and business card designed using a personally created logo.
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05 Eric Lybbert
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.
Process:
When approaching this assignment I decided that I wanted to make a business card that was fun and trendy. Next, I decided to have a chevron pattern fill the white space. I was able to create a chevron pattern by utilizing guides, the pen tool, and lastly the copy and paste features. After creating a few lines, I simply selected the zig zags and dragged them over to the color swatch panel. This then created a chevron fill! Lastly, in order to create the remainder of the business card I used the pathfinder and arrangment features in order for it to look the way I wanted it to.
{logos}
Description: Date:
2.23.13 Three logo variations for the same company.
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05 Eric Lybbert
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image. Use the basic tools of Illustrator.
Process:
I started out with the idea to have a fun colorful logo in order to represent the type of photography that I create. Currently, fun shaped wooden frames are very popular, so I decided to use the shape of a frame as the outside edge to my top border. Then, I wanted to have at least one logo option with a camera involved, so, I looked up some simple shaped cameras and made my own based on what I had seen others do. To make the camera I used basic shape tools. For the middle logo I wanted to again illustrate the shape of the frame somewhat so I used brackets. Next, I thought that a dandelion seed plant was fun and represented my photography as well, so I used that as a brandmark. Again I simply used basic shapes and the pen tool to make it. Again, for the last design I wanted it simple and clean. So, I added a circle and a heart that I drew in order to add small illustrations to the design.
{montage}
Description: Date:
2.12.13 An insperational montage made by the blending of two or more images, and the use of typography.
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05 Eric Lybbert
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Learn to manage Photoshop layers. Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. Use filters. Apply appropriate typography.
Process:
For this assignment, I wanted to make a montage that would give confidence to teenage girls. After finding two images that tie together nicely, I began working in Photoshop. I gave the background a gaussian blur and then roughly painted it on to give more of a worn, overexposed feeling to it in order to match the picture. Then, I moved the background over to the main image and masked the girl. I used a smaller brush to reveal her face in order to assure make sure it was all visible, and then used a large brush around the edges of her in order to have a soft blend to the background.
{letterhead}
Description: Date:
3.2.13 Matching letterhead and business card designed using a personally created logo.
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05 Eric Lybbert
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Use the basic tools of Illustrator & Indesign.
Process:
For the letterhead, I created a new, but simple, logo. For this logo I created contrast between Kyly Blanchard and photography by using different font families and font sizes as well as different colors. I also added small circles next to the word photography in order to make the width the same as the above words. In order to create a designated area for a letter I put a line across the top next to the logo. At the bottom of the letterhead I added another line with contact information beneath it in order to isolate it. In order to create repetition I also added larger circles to tie into the logo. Lastly, I added a camera illustration I created as a watermark.
{brochure}
Description: Date:
3.30.13 A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05 Eric Lybbert
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign Adobe Illustrator Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Learn how to wrap text around an image. Use paragraph styles in InDesign.
Process:
For this brochure, I wanted to make something that was simple and fun in order to be consistent with the business card and letterhead. I chose the colors I did in order to match the pictures I used. In the beginning I wanted to keep with the chevron idea and incorporate it into the front of the brochure, but it didnt work. Instead, I made a full image on the cover with a somewhat transparent box to make the logo still stand out from the backgrounhd. The inside was very simple as I just used photographs and a fun font. For the back, I added some graphics for contrast and to take up space so that I only had contact information on the back.
{imaging}
Description: Date:
2.6.13 A personally taken photograph that has been edited/formatted using Photoshop.
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05 Eric Lybbert
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop Nikon D7000 Camera
Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Size and crop the image. Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels. Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image. Desaturate the selected portion of the image. Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.
Process:
To begin, I sat up a little studio in the middle of my apartment where the natural lighting was good and placed my little boy on his boppy to prop him up. When taking the photo I tried to place his head in the top right cross hair of the rule of thirds. I also tried to remember to give extra area around the edges to make cropping possibilities greater. Next, I de-saturated the whole photo. I then selected my babys skin and slightly blurred it with the gaussian filter in order to create smooth skin. Lastly, I sharpened his eyes with an unsharp mask in order to give the photo a strong focal point.
{flier}
Description: Date:
1.12.13 Black & white promotional flier to promote a graduate leadership conference.
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05 Eric Lybbert
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact.
Process:
First, in order to draw attention, I created a large contrasted heading. Next, in order to create repetition and flow, I used decorative squares at the top and bottom. I colored them to match the shades in the picture that I chose. I then created the subheading Do you want to... that is the same font size as the second part of the title. Next, I inserted the body copy and logo. Lastly I put in the date, time and place in the same font as the title in order to keep viewers bouncing back and forth between the two.
{web page}
Description: Date:
3.16.13 A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo.
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05 Eric Lybbert
Program(s)/Tools:
TextWrangler Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page. Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and content. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS. Identify hex colors for web design. Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.
Process:
I began making this page with a basic html file. All the content I needed was added to the html file, and then was connected to a CSS file in order to change the design of the page. I changed the background color of the whole page to a simple grey in order to match but not detract from the logo. I was then able to change the font families to compliment the logo. A slab serif and sans serif font was used to create contrast. A salmon color was then applied to the background of h1 in order to give emphasis to the title of the page. Lastly, I was able to center my logo in order to create better balance for the overall page. The total word count for this page is 340.
{event ad}
Description: Date:
2.2.13 A colorful full-bleed event ad to promote a fundraiser using only Microsoft Word and a scanner
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05 Eric Lybbert
Program(s)/Tools:
Objectives:
Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Use text boxes for layout in Word. Insert and edit images in Word.
Process:
I first began with the scanned image and applied different effects to it in Word. I wanted to create an ad that looked somewhat worn yet bold. I ended up using a Varsity type font to give the ad a sporty feel. The white font on a black background stuck out very well, but white on the grey backboard didnt. So, I added a shadow in maroon to help it stand out better. Lastly I added all of the details of the tournament to the ad.
