Montage
Description:
An insperational montage made by the blending of two or
more images, and the use of typography.
Date:
June 1, 2014
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 04
Cory Kerr
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Learn to manage Photoshop layers.
Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.
Use filters.
Apply appropriate typography.
Process:
I took a basis background layer of the book. I overlayed
an image of a plaque and created a layer mask of the
image. With the layer mask selected, I used a brush with
a primary color of black and an opacity of 30% to blend
out the unwanted wood color. When you have created a
layer mask, Black makes the image disappear, and White
allows it to show. So if you use the brush with a gradient
paint black it acts as a gradual erasure. I did the same
thing with all the other images. I also did one more thing
to the equation picture. I also used the blending options
on it to make it over all have more transparency.
Logos
Description:
Three logo variations for the same company.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator.
Process:
I wanted to create a Logo for the theoretical company I am
going to start someday. My name is George, so I thought that
Geo would be a good place to start. I got to thinking about
the other connotations of the word Geo and how it relates to
the earth. So I tried creating a series of Logos about an earth
friendly Tech company. In the first Logo I created a gear shape,
with the earth and sky inside, using the circle tool and the
pathfinder tool to merge certain layers. In the Second one,
I took a basic idea that was techy. I created two boxes and
placed the two text boxes with the word phrases in the middle.
For the third one I used the idea of a pyramid to represent
technology/ science. The circle is used to represent the sun.
That way it gave it a more natural feel.

Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.
Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.
Process:
I started by re-thinking my logo design. I used the same
company concept as the last project. This time though I
created just a horizon using the O in Geo to visualize it.
After I created the logo, I wanted to make a letterhead and
business card that used that logo as part of their design. I
didnt want to complex of a letterhead though, so I kept it
simple.

Objectives:
Create a new logo for use with this brochure
Demonstrate grasp of adobe software by creating a brochure that is
about something I like.
Process:
I used Indesign to create a basic layout for the brochure. Then I
found appropriate images to convey the epicness of the game. I used
Photoshop to modify the various images. Using the basic knowledge
I had learned, I created the layout for the text and images. I used
various image types to allow for different effects. The red halo image
had to be a png file to give it transparency.

Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to
keep links intact.
Process:
First, I created a few sketches for my layout. I then used one of
my sketches as a guide to create my layout in Adobe InDesign.
The image, logo, and content for this flier were given to me in the
instructions. I emphasized the first word of the title to give it more
emphasis. The angled nature of the layout is intended to draw the
eye down the page. I intentionally emphasized certain words in the
body of the text to show that I am looking to provide these skills
and techniques to the graduates. I left white space around the
more info to also draw the eye to them.

Insert and edit images in Word.
Process:
I found an image, that was large enough, in a the Ensign.
I scanned the image at a friends place and placed it on a
flash drive. Simply then, I imported it into a Microsoft Word
document, and used the Microsoft Word tools provided to
create the rest of the design.

Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it
appeals to a target audience.
Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS.
Identify hex colors for web design.
Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.
Process:
I used the ellipse tool to create the outer and inner circles. I created a
smaller cricle and copy/ rotated it around the outer circumference of the large
circle to give the cut out look of a gear. Then I offset the center and mid circle
to give the idea of a horizon. I placed another circle behind the topmost circle
to create the idea of the sun rising over the horizon. I used the shapebuilder
tool to intersect and divide the shape overlaps to make it unified. I placed
the text stacked in the center. Then I enlarged the Geo to match the width of
the Tech. I chose a serifed font to give angles to an otherwise non-angular
design. The logo process description needs to be at least 200 words. Include
all of the above elements, plus any other pertinent information.

Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Size and crop the image.
Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels.
Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image.
Desaturate the selected portion of the image.
Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.
Process:
took a picture from my previous post and placed it a bit above the
medium on my image to help create a sense of the rule of thirds. The title
and subtitle are placed in the bottom third. The Church is aligned in the
mid third . And the sky is aligned in the top third. I tried to create a split
complementary scheme with the colors of the layout. The shapes are
meant to represent a palette board in front of a easel. I manipulated the
shapes for a while to get the right feel. I used Photoshop CC during this
project to show my skill with it. I learned how to use the magic wand and
the polygon selection tool while working on this project.
