Simple explanation about shell

Shell analysis is combine both plate and plane stress (membrane force) analysis. The Nx , Ny ,Nxy of membrane element is same of the plane stress interpretation (please refer to simple explanation of plane stress) and its shown as below, Z

X Nx N xy N xy

Ny

The Syz, Sxz, Mx, My and Mxy of plate (please refer to simple explanation of plate) is shown as below,

S xz

S yz

t dz

X Mx

M xy

y
M xy

My

The shear (Syz and Sxz) and moment per unit length (Mx and My) is derived as below;

s yz s xz
Mx

M xy x M xy

M y y

So the analysis of plane stress combine of analysis of plate will give the following force and the element analysis with these 8 forces is termed as shell element. Z

S xz M xy

S yz M xy

So the Mx , My , Mxy ,Sxz , Syz , Nx , Ny and Nxy in the 3D frame element in Esteem is related to Mx , My , Mxy ,Sxz , Syz x ,y ,xy. Their relationships are analogous to equation 1, 2 and 3.
