TARBELA DAM According to the International Commission on Large Dams, total dams and reservoirs in Pakistan over the

height of 15 m (49 ft) are 143.Tarbela Dam is the largest earth filled dam in the world and is second largest by the structural volume. Mirani Dam is the largest dam in the world in terms of volume for flood protection with a floodstock of 588,690 cubic hectometer while Sabakzai Dam is 7th largest in the world with a floodstock of 23,638 cubic hectometer. Tarbela dam is located in Haripur District, Hazara Division, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, about 50 kilometres northwest of Islamabad.The primary function of the Tarbela project was to regulate the Indus River flows for the benefit of irrigation. A secondary function is the generation of electric power. Incidental benefits include limited flood control of the Indus River, a substantial contribution to tourism, commercial fishing possibilities and added employment opportunities during and after construction.
