Planning Thought Processes Context of Exploration - Sorting ocean animals in sectioned trays with pictures of each different type of animal in each section Rationale We will be building on experiences of sorting ocean animals in sensory table. Anticipating challenges -Children unable to sort animals Children not understanding concept of matching like animals. -I would remove the sorting trays and offer the animals to freely explore. I would hold up one animal and ask the children to find me the others that look like it. 5. Materials Provide trays with pictures of animals for sorting. Four plastic animals of each type: red fish, blue fish, green fish, seal, dolphin, turtle, orange fish, and whale. - Are you materials promoting inquiry? Creativity? Self expression? Exploration? Wonder?

6. Activity Procedure A. Motivation/Introduction Sorting trays will be on the table next to the sensory table and art activities. Who would like to come over and help me sort these ocean animals? B. Concept exploration - Show example of how to use the activity, model sorting into the correct section on the tray - Children will then begin attempting it themselves or sort in a different way C. Inquiry (Open Ended Questions) - What color fish do you see? - What animals do you see on the tray? Do you think we could put the fish in groups by their colors? Whats another way we can sort them?

D. Closure -How many turtles did we find? What color fish did we find? How could we sort other objects? E. Assessment - Once the children have finished sorting the animals by color and type. - Once the children become uninterested in the activity. Extension Ideas - Bring sorting into other activities that do not originally involve sorting. Counting ocean animals found in a book while reading a book about the ocean.
