USING CONTENT KNOWLEDGE TO BUILD MEANINGFUL CURRICULUM Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs use their knowledge of academic disciplines to. Candidates understand the importance of developmental domains and academic (or content) disciplines in early childhood curriculum. They know the essential concepts, inquiry tools, and structure of content areas, including academic subjects, and can identify resources to deepen their understanding. Candidates use their own knowledge and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate meaningful, challenging curriculum that promotes comprehensive developmental and learning outcomes for every young child (National Association for the Education of Young Children). Brief Description of Evidence: As part of the Engaging the Brain project in ECED 243, I created eight lesson plans; one lesson plan to cover each of the eight intelligences covered in Gardners Multiple Intelligences Theory. I created ocean-themed activities, which cover the different learning styles of all children. Analysis of What I Learned: While studying Gardners Theory of Multiple Intelligences in class, I gained a better understanding of how to promote positive development and learning for each and every child. I applied this new understanding to the writing of the lesson plans so children will be able to learn at their highest potential. In creating the lesson plans covering all eight of the Multiple Intelligences, I have learned the essential concepts, inquiry tools, and structure of content areas, including academic subjects, and can identify resources to deepen their understanding. How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard: I designed, implemented, and evaluated experiences that promote positive development and learning for each and every young child through lesson plans based off of early learning standards, along with Gardners Multiple Intelligence Theory. I used my own knowledge and other resources such as the internet, other professional and resource books to design, implement, and evaluate meaningful, challenging curriculum that promotes comprehensive developmental and learning outcomes for every young child After completing the activities I evaluated the lesson plans based off of the childrens interest as well as the knowledge gained when completing the activity.
