Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection

NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 5. USING CONTENT KNOWLEDGE TO BUILD MEANINGFUL CURRICULUM
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs use their knowledge of academic disciplines to
design, implement, and evaluate experiences that promote positive development and learning for each and
every young child. Candidates understand the importance of developmental domains and academic (or
content) disciplines in early childhood curriculum. They know the essential concepts, inquiry tools, and
structure of content areas, including academic subjects, and can identify resources to deepen their
understanding. Candidates use their own knowledge and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate
meaningful, challenging curriculum that promotes comprehensive developmental and learning outcomes for
every young child. (NAEYC, 2010)
Brief Description of Evidence:
During the summer semester of 2013 during my ECED 103-Early Childhood Curriculum course, I created
a Bakery Prop Box. It contained items that would encourage children to take on the role of a Baker or to run a
Bakery. It included literacy items such as a cookbook, recipe cards, pens, pencils, menus, cookie and brownie
mix boxes and blank note books for taking orders. It also included math items such as a calculator, a cash
draw with play money, measuring spoons and cups, cupcake pans, a timer and price stickers. In addition, it
contained aprons, chefs hats and oven mitts to promote pretend play.
Analysis of What I Learned:
By modeling Bruners Constructivism theory, while implementing this assignment, I learned the
importance of identifying resources and inquiry tools to deepen a childs understanding and by creating a
meaningful, challenging curriculum I ensure a variety of developmental and learning outcomes.
How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
This artifact demonstrates my competence on this standard by showing I can affectively use my knowledge of
academic disciplines to design, implement and evaluate experiences to promote positive learning in each of the
developmental domains.
