Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact Rationale/Reflection NAEYC Standard:

STANDARD 5.USING CONTENT KNOWLEDGE TO BUILD MEANINGFUL CURRICULUM Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs use their knowledge of academic disciplines to design, implement, and evaluate experiences that promote positive development and learning for each and every young child. Candidates understand the importance of developmental domains and academic (or content) disciplines in early childhood curriculum. They know the essential concepts, inquiry tools, and structure of content areas, including academic subjects, and can identify resources to deepen their understanding. Candidates use their own knowledge and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate meaningful, challenging curriculum that promotes comprehensive developmental and learning outcomes for every young child (NAEYC, 2010).

Brief Description of Evidence:

As part of my ECED 103 Early Childhood Curriculum course during the 2013 fall semester at Ivy Tech Community College, I compiled five strong pins/pictures from Pinterest in order to create an art board on my Pinterest page. Pinterest has thumbnail views that link you to the original source. I chose developmentally appropriate pins/pictures and two corresponding foundations that matched the activity in the pin/picture. The assignment also required us to post the age at which the activity is aimed. The pins/pictures showed ideas for disciplines in early childhood education.

Analysis of What I Learned:

While I was designing my art board on Pinterest, I kept the foundations in mind and learned to look quality pins/pictures. I looked to other Pinterest boards for insight and evaluated my own board to make sure it promoted positive development. I also discovered that people produce great ideas for the classroom while teaching the essential concepts to each and every child. By being creative with art activities, the childrens developmental domains are being reached while the children use all of their senses.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:

My Pinterest board for art shows competency by using the foundations as a resource. The thumbnails on Pinterest are developmentally appropriate and made me look harder for quality pictures. I had to evaluate each pin/picture to make sure that they showcased the essential concepts and were able to match up to the foundations.
