2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The opening title sequence of EDWARD.

Female Protagonists

Our opening title sequence clearly depicts the image of vulnerable, helpless females in distress. This is shown through the shots of the girls running through the forest as the audience can infer they are running away from something, or someone stronger, and more dangerous than themselves.

These shots particularly represent social groups of vulnerable women as the long shots emphasise the running action, and consequently , the need for escape.

The clothing of the girls in Edward can be said to challenge the stereotypical appearance of a damsel in distress which is often seen in horror films. For example, the women in Heavenly Creatures (1994), wore a variety of clothing in the opening title sequence, to challenge or portray different social groups. The long masculine coats at the very beginning challenge the typical image of a vulnerable woman, however the white dresses in the analepsis, adheres to a more feminine group.

The females in Edward challenge the typical social group of women, as they were dark colours, and black leggings, as opposed to a typical, feminine dress. Contrastingly, there is a medium shot of one of the girls wearing a bright red dress, to connote the danger of the chase, through her innocence.

To conclude

Our opening title sequence of Edward does represent a social group of vulnerable young girls, as they are seen to be running frantically through the woods, instead of shown to be opposing the enemy. However, the mis en scene challenges the typical conventions of the vulnerable female as they are seen to be wearing dark, masculine clothes, much unlike the women in Heavenly Creatures.
