For this assessment you will be allowed to have out any notes or formative work for the Africa Unit (the Congo and genocide packets are not permitted). Keep in mind that an open note assessment (such as this) will be graded harder than a typical assessment. On a separate piece of paper(s) please answer the following two short essay questions (minimum of 2 paragraphs each):

1) We have learned quite a bit about Africa before and after colonization. Your job is to choose two of the following themes (government, social classes, family patterns, the role/status of women, religion, economy, education, or language) and explain how they existed in Africa before colonization, after colonization, and why change (if any) occurred. Be sure to explain in detail how various individuals and nations/empires played a role.

2) Weve spent the past week and a half discussing the topic of genocide both in Africa and around the world. First you must define what genocide means. Next you must choose two of the following genocides we learned about (Armenian, the Holocaust, Cambodian, Bosnian, and Rwandan) and explain what lead up to the genocide, which nations & ethnic groups were involved, how the international community responded and how it eventually was resolved. Think back to any discussions, films, or group activities weve used in class on this topic.
