The following is an account of a bullying issue Nick Rossi and I dealt with over a 2 week period in our co-taught

freshmen Ancient Civilizations course: Student A is a Black French ESL student. Student B is an African American male. Student C is an African American male. Student D is an African American male. On Wednesday of the first week Student B stood up and challenged Student A to fight after a miscommunication between the two. I immediately separated the two students and pulled each individually into the hall to learn about what happened. Both students received referrals and their assistant principals/deans got involved. The next day (Thursday) there didnt seem to be any problems but Student A stayed after class longer than usual and I spotted Students B and C walking up and down the hall after class. I notified their APs and called home for both students involved in the initial issue (I had a French teacher help me call home for Student A). Monday on the second week class started off with an issue in which Student D marched into class seeking a conflict with Student A. Both students were taken out of class and received suspensions from class the next day. We had learned that the two young men fought each other before school and this was a follow up conflict. Wednesday on the second week Student C pushed Student A in class and made some mean comments towards him. Again both students were written up and the APs handled the situation by suspending the boys from this class period for the next couple days. At this point we have not had any problems in class and there has been mediation between both sides involved in this bullying issue.
